Fuel Taxes Must Rise, Harvard Researchers Say ($7 gallon gas to meet Obama's targets for emissions?)

To meet the Obama administration’s targets for cutting greenhouse gas emissions, some researchers say, Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.

To reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the transportation sector 14 percent from 2005 levels by 2020, the cost of driving must simply increase, according to a forthcoming report by researchers at Harvard’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs.

The 14 percent target was set in the Environmental Protection Agency’s budget for fiscal 2010.

I’m still ticked. By what gives this Harvard Professor the right to destroy my family and my future. By what authority do the gibber heads of the Obama administration destroy my family and my future? GERRRRR

Once upon a time, I had respect for Harvard and its’ grads.

Now, it just a fairy tale.

“Hybrid Offset Vehicle”.

Think I’ll see if I can get a bumper sticker made with this phrase to put on my Jeep. Thanks!

I have news for these MORANS from Harvard:
$5 gasoline killed the US and world economy when coupled with triple deficit spending, government inflated housing and mortgage markets, and political/financial thievery. Now the deficits are even bigger and the taxpayers are getting mugged even worse - -$7 gas will tank the whole shebang permanently. There will no longer be a carbon emissions “issue” because there will no longer be any commercial enterprise at all. GDP will evaporate and so will the goobermint. We can’t afford it, you geniuses!

“$7 per gallon gas would result in the great depression looking like the good old days.”

I suspect that people would be using $5.00/gal gasoline in non-automotive applications to help explain to politicians that $7.00/gal gasoline is really not a good idea. So, it probably wouldn’t really ever get to $7.00 (in today’s money).

Brazilian ethanol

From the article at link:

"Even if Brazilian ethanol remains uncompetitive with gasoline in its domestic market, there is another reason to think that the U.S. is more likely to import significant amounts of Brazilian ethanol than vice versa: last week, when the U.S. released its revised renewable fuel standards (RFS), it found that Brazilian sugarcane ethanol reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 61% compared to petroleum. This number is significant, because any non-corn based fuel that reduces emissions more than 60% qualifies as an "undifferentiated advanced biofuel" and U.S. refiners will be required to purchase escalating amounts of this fuel in the coming years. Although 3rd Generation biofuel companies are developing promising algae, biobutanol, and synthetic biofuels that, in theory, might qualify as a fuel that reduces GHGs by 60%, what is the likelihood that these companies will be able to compete with Brazilian ethanol, at least over the short to medium term"

Oh, it certainly could. Maybe not exclusively because of supply and demand, but because of the devaluation of the dollar and/or an increase in taxes. With taxes, inflation, and regulations, there are substantial amounts of extra unnecessary and hidden costs added to the price of our energy supply chain.

I'm sure Lindsay Gramnesty will do his best to make this happen.

Perhaps we could ease the problem by making natural swamp gas out of all existing Harvard faculty members.

Americans may have to experience a sobering reality: gas at $7 a gallon.

Reality???? What Reality? $7 gas has no no basis in reality. It would merely be a government construct. That’s not reality... Lots and lots is wrong with the article. But what stuck in my craw is the idea that an artificial government price scheme is reality just pisses me off.

At that price, the economy will be dead. You won’t need to buy gas because you can’t afford to go anywhere. So the money raised by the tax = 0.00
