How Obama can shift the health-care debate
Washington Post ^ | March 5, 2010 | David Ignatius

Posted on 03/06/2010 3:04:24 PM PST by ricks_place

The ground of debate shifts when a prominent figure says that a contentious topic is a matter of morality, not politics. President Obama should remember that precept in these final days of the health-care debate.

The best recent example of the power of moral argument was Adm. Mike Mullen’s frank statement to Congress last month about the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy for gays in the military: “No matter how I look at this issue, I cannot escape being troubled by the fact that we have in place a policy which forces young men and women to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.”

By treating the issue as a matter of conscience, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs altered the national conversation...

Obama needs to take a similar moral stand in the health-care debate. As he meets with wavering congressmen and makes a final push for a bill, he should stress that the reason to pass health-care reform isn’t because it will cut premiums, or reduce costs, or help middle-class workers, or any of the other politically expedient arguments that have been advanced. It’s because extending health care to all citizens is morally the right thing to do.

Here’s what I want Obama to say:

A just society assures its citizens’ basic needs. It protects their “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” irrespective of the circumstances they were born into. Citizenship in a great country should not be a DNA lottery, or a case of survival of the richest. A nation has a moral obligation to care for its people, and if it fails to do so, it is a lesser country.

The truth is Obamacare had been on the front burner since early last summer. The public opposes the plan by roughly a 60/40 margin, which hasn’t budged since late in the summer. Nothing Obama or anybody else says at this point is going to shift public opinion to any significant degree one way or another.

Why is it that no politician raised the fundamental question, namely, is it the proper role of government to provide health care?

Asking that question makes Mother Pelosi laugh. There would be really very few who have the balls to ask that. Raising the "proper role of government" question is just kookery to most, even around here.

The pivot to “morality” on Obamacare can mean only one thing:

Waterloo Barry Waterloo.

It’s dead Jim.

I just want to know when we will allow serial-killers into the armed forces. Right now, they have to lie about who they are in order to defend their fellow citizens.

Actually, the official policy is "no Gays". But the "don't ask ,don't tell" doesn't make people lie, it just makes them keep their mouth shut.

A just society assures its citizens’ basic needs.

I don't think he knows what "assures" means. It doesn't mean "insures". Of course, under the common definition, a "just society" does no such thing. It's not the job of "society" to care for individuals, only to care for the society.

Is it moral to debase the current Health Care system with a government takeover, mandatory unions, death panels, health panels, fewer doctors, more suffering, required abortion funding, higher costs, and no choice? The moral argument is against this Obama bill.

The 'rats/socialists in the House will pass the Senate bill and with MAO-bama's signature, it's all over.

Our next line of defense will be lawsuits on the Constitutionality, winning control in 2010 and electing Sara as Pres in 2012 and reversing this monster.

Obama could shift the health-care debate into a winning situation for himself, if he just came out and said the bill as it stands, sucks! And the best thing that could be done for the American people would be to trash this crime against the people and start over from scratch. Leaving out all the buy offs for senators votes, forcing citizens to buy insurance, paying for abortion, cutting medicare, and on and on. And actually work “FOR” the people instead of against us.

screamkill

They are halfway right about the moral issue. CommieCare will end up killing more people than the current system as medical advancements stall and people die waiting for rationed care. A government should not morally kill it's own citizens. I might add rich people live longer and as this will make us all poorer that too will kill even more.

TRI CARE FOR LIFE This from a google search:

This option would help reduce the costs of TFL, as well as costs for Medicare, by introducing minimum out-of pocket requirements for beneficiaries. Under this option, TFL would not cover any of the first $525 of an enrollee’s cost-sharing liabilities for calendar year 2011 and would limit coverage to 50 percent of the next $4,725 in Medicare cost sharing that the beneficiary incurred. (Because all further cost sharing would be covered by TFL, enrollees could not pay more than $2,888 in cost sharing in that year.) http://www.cbo.gov/ftpdocs/99xx/doc9925/12-18-HealthOptions.pdf

By Rick Maze - Staff writer, Oct 7, 2009

Tricare fee increases imposed last week by the Defense Department will be repealed by a provision of the compromise 2010 defense authorization bill unveiled Wednesday by House and Senate negotiators.

The fee increases were announced on Sept. 30 and took effect on Oct. 1, but the defense bill, HR 2647, includes a provision barring any fee increases until the start of fiscal 2011.

Retired Army Maj. Gen. Bill Matz, president of the National Association for Uniformed Services, said the announcement of fee increases was shocking considering that the Obama administration promised earlier this year to hold off on any new fee Tricare fee increases until fiscal 2011.

“President Obama and DoD assured NAUS and the entire military family earlier this year that there would rightly be no increases in any Tricare fees” in fiscal 2010, Matz said. “We took them at their word, and I can’t believe that a co-pay increase like this was allowed to go forward,” he added.

I was in the Army for 6 years. Never once did my sexuality ever come into question. I never served with women in the Army, but I don’t see how that would have changed anything. Yes, there were two guys taking a shower together which caused them to be discharged, but the country wasn’t in danger because of it.
