Officials Step Up Enforcement of Rights Laws in Education
New York Times ^ | March 7, 2010 | Sam Dillon

Seeking to step up enforcement of civil rights laws, the federal Department of Education says it will be sending letters in coming weeks to thousands of school districts and colleges, outlining their responsibilities on issues of fairness and equal opportunity.

As part of that effort, the department intends to open investigations known as compliance reviews in about 32 school districts nationwide, seeking to verify that students of both sexes and all races are getting equal access to college preparatory curriculums and to advanced placement courses. The department plans to open similar civil rights investigations at half a dozen colleges.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan is to announce the initiatives in a speech on Monday in Selma, Ala., where on March 7, 1965, hundreds of civil rights marchers were beaten by Alabama state troopers.

Mr. Duncan plans to say that in the past decade the department’s Office for Civil Rights “has not been as vigilant as it should have been in combating gender and racial discrimination and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities,” according to a text of the speech distributed to reporters on Sunday.

It continues, “We are going to reinvigorate civil rights enforcement.”

At the end of high school, white students are about six times as likely to be ready to pursue college-level biology courses as black students, and more than four times as likely to be ready for college algebra, department officials said. White high school graduates are more than twice as likely to have taken advanced placement calculus classes as black or Latino graduates.

The department enforces civil rights laws in schools and universities by responding to specific complaints from parents, students and others, but also by scrutinizing its own vast bodies of data on the nation’s school and university systems, looking for signs of possible discrimination.

How about equal opportunity in college admissions? If black students are being disciplined at higher rates, it's because more black students are misbehaving. The biggest victims of the breakdown in discipline in mostly black schools have been the black kids who *do* want an education.

Whenever I read the newspaper I get the feeling this administration is trying to destroy America at warp speed.

Regarding the paragraph At the end of high school, white students are about six times as likely to be ready to pursue college-level biology courses as black students, and more than four times as likely to be ready for college algebra, department officials said. White high school graduates are more than twice as likely to have taken advanced placement calculus classes as black or Latino graduates.

disparities in course offerings reflect what students in various schools are prepared to study. In a school where no one has mastered Algebra II, there is no point in offering AP Calculus.

What about the attitude exhibited by some black children that studying and getting good grades is "acting white"? And what about number of black children growing up in homes headed by single mothers?

I know, those are obviously questions rooted in racism and show a lack of understanding on my part of the need to create new jobs for the public sector.

This article conveniently overlooks COMPLETELY what Asians do. I would bet a paycheck that if you had the statistics, Asians are even more likely than whites to have taken AP classes, particularly math classes. As usual, by ignoring the statistics for an agenda or because of stupidity (many MSM journalists are record setting ignoramuses), whitey is the bad guy in this socialist racial hatred narrative.

Do I sense the coming of PAYBACK? It appears that the college professors, those who preach the EVIL of the USA, its unfairness, its greed, and its “unfair” practices are going to get a personal lesson in life under the scrutiny of an overbearing pencil pusher.
I’d advise those denizens of the campus to fear a NEW type of assault weapon. Worry not about the extremely rare nut with a gun, rather fear the determined bureaucrat wielding a 45 caliber CLIPBOARD.
When ordered to justify that ONLY 43.2834% of a (given minority) got a B grade while 43.989% of (given majority) received a B grade, they will finally learn what they have done.

How about institutionalized racism at government controlled schools in cities with Democrat or Black majorities or both?

How do you explain that?

I do know the solution - vouchers.

Could it be that white parents encourage their children to get an education so they can make their position in life better while society's welfare-minded minorities stand around waiting for government to hand them their piece of the 'pie'?

Nah....that would be racist!

While all this talks about is “combating gender and racial discrimination and protecting the rights of individuals with disabilities”, does this include any of the following?:

LGBT “civil rights”, such as homosexual marriage, and promoting LGBT instruction in lieu of traditional “non-homocentric” studies like English, math, and reading.

Remember also that a full fledged pedobear, Kevin Jennings, is now the “Assistant Deputy Secretary for Safe and Drug-Free Schools”, which he is interpreting to mean “Advocating adult sex with children in schools”. He is very big on making such things *mandatory*.

Which brings to mind why this guy hasn’t yet been put in prison, much less removed from any association with children whatsoever.

By equal they mean quotas. Thanks reaganaut1.

Before we start "reinvigorating" made up Rights, how about we "reinvigorate" the Original First 10?

Ask the Dept of Ed about schools RKBA stances... How about "nonPC" speech? Freedom OF Religion instead of their idiotic "freedom from Religion" policies?

Anyone? Bueller?

“I would bet a paycheck that if you had the statistics, Asians are even more likely than whites to have taken AP classes, particularly math classes.”

Mainly because the Asian community understands the logic of getting good grades.
