ACORN is out of Ohio's elections
THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH ^ | March 11, 2010 | James Nash

Posted on 03/11/2010 8:11:01 AM PST by opentalk

In legal settlement, group agrees not to return to state.

ACORN, the liberal group notorious for allegedly trying to inflate voter rolls through fraudulent practices, has seen its last election in Ohio.

The Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now will permanently surrender its Ohio business license by June1 as part of a legal settlement with the conservative Buckeye Institute for Public Policy Solutions, both sides said yesterday.

ACORN was active in Ohio in the 2006 and 2008 elections, working to register thousands of low-income people to vote and get them to the polls. The group's efforts were marred by irregularities, including one case in which ACORN workers allegedly induced a Cleveland man to register to vote 72 times, offering cigarettes as an incentive.

The Buckeye Institute's 1851 Center for Constitutional Law teamed with two Warren County residents to sue ACORN in Warren County Common Pleas Court just before the 2008 election. The residents alleged that their rights were abridged by thousands of fraudulent voter registrations, each representing "a potential illegal vote that has the capacity to dilute (legitimate) votes."

The case was moved to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio.

..."They will surrender their business license by June 1 and cease to operate in Ohio and cease to support or enable other groups to do what they do," Thompson said.

When they do this, they also need to ban the CEO and board of directors from working on those issues in the state again under any name.

Beat me to it. The day after the election was too late.

By the way, I notice that Game Change does not mention the voter fraud, in its "complete" rundown of the 2008 election, except in passing mention of complaints by Bill and Hillary about the primaries. Makes me wonder if stuff on fraud was removed and the subsequent passages were overlooked. But then it is a stinkingly pro-Obama book that the authors claim is nonpartisan, so probably the fraud was not considered important.

Yeah, but they changed their name.. ACORN has officially changed its name to “Community Organizations International.”Does this also mean that the COI cannot have anything to do with voting..

What name will they use in Ohio now?

Probably something like "Americans for Conservatism" to draw Republican support from people who don't background check such organizations.

Yes but what about their new name Community Organizer International, COI? Good news but I do wonder about whether their new name will magically appear here in Ohio?

Will AmeriCorp enter voting registration vacuum?

They are tax payer funded. Obama's new plan to nationalize college loans, (managed by freddie and fannie) may play into this. I thought part of the requirement for the loan was community service. (gov service) May be something to this.

And when will all “community organizers” (aka “rabble rousers”) be subject to prosecution?

FNC is talking about some ditzy judge saying it is “unconstitutional” for Congress to stop funding ACORN. I know, this happened about a week or two ago. My question is, shouldn’t Congress now be forced to also fund TEA PARTY “community organizers”? Hmmmmmmm?

They are changing their name all over the place.

California ACORN has “rebranded” as (ACCE), or Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment.

ACORN in New York has a new name of New York Communities for Change. (NYCC)

The Dallas office answers as The Texas Organizing Project. (TOP)
