Maldonado: GOP can’t just serve tacos and expect Latinos to sign up

State Sen. Abel Maldonado, the moderate Santa Maria Republican running for lieutenant governor, opened his speech to party convention delegates Saturday afternoon by acknowledging the discomfort many of them have with him for supporting new taxes, among other votes he has taken. When he walked into the room, he said, a delegate greeted him by saying, "Hey Abel, I think you're with the wrong party."

"And I looked at him, and I said, 'I'm not with the wrong party, I'm with the right party. Let me tell you why.' "

Maldonado, who spoke after the room had somewhat emptied following a speech by Senate candidate Carly Fiorina, retold an oft-told story about his father's journey from Mexico to the United States in 1963, penniless, and his success as a farmer thereafter. He used that tale to convey that Republicans need to better engage Latinos, saying their desire to get ahead is a more natural fit with the GOP, yet Latinos flock to the Democrats.

When his father arrived, he said, he picked a job line over a welfare line; had he picked welfare, he would have become a Democrat, Maldonado said, and he picked up the lesson. Maldonado recalled being asked by another Latino why he was a Republican. "You want to be poor?" he said he responded. "The other folks keep you poor."

Who cares? The only latinos we want in the party are those who have conservative values and who are patriotic Americans first.

And there are plenty of them, many having served in our armed forces.

No, my understanding is Maldonado had quesadillas (somebody can correct me if they atteneded the suite earlier) and a mariachi band in his hospitality suite. Abel, are you being a hypocrite or are you being the typical asshole you are? Probably both.

Abel, it has absolutely nothing to do with your ethnicity you stupid, condescending douche-bag. Take your Al Sharpton/Jesse Jackson tactics and go take a hike you piece of garbage.

“Who cares? The only latinos we want in the party are those who have conservative values and who are patriotic Americans first.”

The problem is that long-term demographics are starting to look ugly. A hell of a lot of illegals have been allowed to stay around far too long and have far too many citizen children. Those kids who are chocking our schools will be voting before long and they’ll be voting for the party who offers the biggest handouts.

You raise a valid point. Whether we want to admit it or not, the long-term demographics do not favor whites and in many ways, do not bode well for the GOP.

There’s one immediate solution and that’s cracking on down on illegal immigration. I don’t think there’s much we can do about the illegals currently here. There’s too damned many of them for our govt to find ‘em all and deport ‘em. But we can and should do everything we can to prevent mnore of them from getting in.

In the article, a point was made by Abel Maldonado where he basically said to Hispanics “Hey, you wanna remain poor? Then keep voting for the Democrats”.

Somehow we have to get to the Hispanics that are out there and say “The GOP has a better way”. It will require a lot of money and effort and the short-term results probably won’t look good. An effort like this has to go on for many years.

But it’s gotta be clear “If you favor amnesty for those who break the law and if you want a complete bilingual society (ala Quebec), then we’re not the party for you. If you want freedom and the ability to set YOUR future, then come join us”.

I just wonder what would have happened to this fellow if he had said that you can’t just go out and throw a party and serve fried chicken and watermelon and Miller beer and get the black vote.

So? Let them vite for the handouts. Soon there won;t be any money for hand outs , then what will they do? Go out and work as they will have to.

Iam not for the big tent.I am for making sure that anyone who claims to be a Republican is not a liberal in disguise waiting for handouts form a Republican government.

The handouts have to stop and so do the promises to do them.

Most latinos who work are religious Roman Catholic conservatives. I do not buy your demographics at all.

Maldonado can kiss my A$$ -
It is in the interest of all citizen to show up for the GOP!
Communism (read CommieCrate program) benefits the elite crooks and insiders, to the exclusion of all others!
To suggest that you have to bribe people to act in their own self interests is insane at the minimum!

The problem of course is that our lavish welfare state continues to remain a strong lure for far too many immigrants and illegals. These people come here for a handout, and there is no way they will EVER vote for a conservative.

Those kids who are chocking our schools will be voting before long and they’ll be voting for the party who offers the biggest handouts.

I am not even sure of that.
You seem to forget that when the Irish for example first came to New York, there were treated like dirt by the Anglos and called all kinds of names, and lived in pretty poor conditions. Heck even the later Irish arrivals were pounced upon by the earlier Irish arrivals. Today, the Irish Americans have pretty good standards of living in this country. The fact that one’s parents are poor doesn't necessarily mean one will be poor as well.
But yeah, as at now, and in the foreseeable future, most Latino's(like most blacks(), will continue to vote for the Democrats. Nothing is really going to change that, so we might as well follow solid conservative principles, without worrying pandering to one race or the other.

“GOP can’t just serve tacos and expect Latinos to sign up”

Heck no. The ILLEGALS want more than just tacos—they want amnesty and “free everything”. The legal immigrants are the ones looking for a better life and the OPPORTUNITY to make a better life in the US.

Geraldo Rivera was recently shoveling the same philosophy on some talk show; even with 50% out-of-wedlock birth rates, hispanics are basically social conservatives.

Of course, for Geraldo, Lenin and Trotsky look like conservatives.

Latinos (and Latinas) will not be won over to the GOP by stupid bows to the gods of Political Correctness.

They will relate to, Church. Mary. God. Family. And tradition.

And frankly the unapologetic embrace of that simple truth, what the French call: “vive la différence”.

Too bad, the GOP isn’t anymore - the party of all that...

Sorry dude but that horse has run out of the barn. The Hispanics voted for Obama 65% and will stay in the Democrat camp.

65% is in play.

Far larger as a voting block, and far more likely to be won over, than stubbornly socialist Jewish-Americans. At 79% for Obama.

The GOP can win Hispanics.

But not by appealing to the least common denominator. Look at Mexico. There is a very simple, and ubiquitous respect for success.

Mexico (and by extention much of America’s Hispanic population) is not about illegal aliens.

It is about family, hard work and winning. And more than just a tiny bit, about Cojones.

An idea, the GOP would to well to ... LEARN.

MOST hispanics and MOST blacks will vote for the party that GIVES them the most.

Hey, we’re running out of money to GIVE AWAY stuff... now what?

Could we give away watermelons for the black vote? What a stupid article.
