My grandfather drank a Coke® and two months later he died at a nursing home at 91 years old. Coincidence? I think not.

Well, there is no such thing as second hand soda, so I’m not sure how far the analogy will go.

You can choose to challenge a Statist, one world socialist utopia loving idealist at your own risk while being only a little bit conservative or libertarian. Good luck!

Let me kick your butt up and down the sidewalk for public amusement for the pitchfork and torches carrying fellow citizens.

If Gubmint is paying for your healthcare, it is their right, indeed their duty, to intervene and save taxpayer money on issues that could effect public health. It's in our COLLECTIVE interest.

Smoke is smelly. OK. It effects others.

I think the real differences have real consequences. We really don’t know exactly what the ramifications of the sucrase step in the digestive process is, but many think that
it moderates eating. There clearly needs to be more study of this, but it’s wrong to simply state that there is no difference. It probably works something like this: when the sucrase gets released to chop the sucrose into fructose and glucose, it sends a signal to the brain that there’s food there, and that you can stop eating. I’m not an expert, but I think that there’s some kind of stop eating signal that is bound up with the sucrose / sucrase.

That is an “important” public health question. Sucrase, sucrose and their effect on the hapless citizens bellies needs to be studied.

Give me $54,000,000 in government research grants and I will do it.

Just let me know what result you want.

If you’re with the corn refiners association, you want the answer that hfcs acts in the body identically to food that actually exists in nature.

We really don’t know exactly what the ramifications of the sucrase step in the digestive process is, but many think that

We have a solid understanding of this process and it is nothing like you envision.

but it’s wrong to simply state that there is no difference.

A simple course in chemistry and nutrition would disabuse you of this belief.

it sends a signal to the brain that there’s food there, and that you can stop eating.

Satiation is mediated in the blood. That would occur after the body absorbs the glucose and fructose. At that point, your body is incapable of determining the source of the glucose and fructose. The satiety profiles of HFCS and sucrose are essentially the same. There is no debate and there is no need to study it any further.

Oh yes, with universal health care, everything I do is my neighbor’s business. Whether/if/how I work out, whether I put my muffler on in the winter, how often I brush my teeth. . .

Oh, and I’ve seen public health a-holes railing against fruit juice too. Children should eat whole fruit only - no JUICE.

I’d like to lock a wild badger in these people’s car.

Will there be a soft-drink extortion agreement with Coke and Pepsico like the tobacco extortion agreement?

I just heard this morning that Pepsi has voluntarily halted all sales of sugared sodas to schools - gaia-wide.

Well, I stumbled on a weird porn site once. I'm pretty sure that's what they were doing there.

The weren't rich enough so " wham bamm thank you mam " boom HFCS!

And the reason they did that was due to a complex system of tariffs and quotas that keeps the US price of sugar artificially high.

HAHAHA! Oh, that's rich coming from one FR's vocal supporters of the War on Drugs.

I'm out of the business of facilitating retarded libertarians on this website. If you don't recognize the obvious differences between illegal drugs and soda pop, I'm not going to help you. I can't keep track of every single one of you pinheads, but I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you at least try to make logical arguments (a dangerous assumption when it comes to libertarians):

If you draw no distinction between taxes on soda pop and legalized drugs, it stands to reason that you believe that heroin and methamphetamine should be sold with restriction to whoever wants them across the street from grade schools. If you disagree, you're a hypocrite. If you agree, you're f---ing nuts and I have no interest in continuing this conversation.

This is a thread about obnoxious taxation jackass. Your libertarian wetdreams don't apply here.

You’re a fan of soda so your arguments for it are irrelevant to this thread.

That makes zero sense. I am here complaining about the tax. You are here attacking the soda.

I never said “it rots your stomach”, I said, (probably incorrectly) that it hinders digestion.

In fact it does not. There are digestive enzymes in saliva that only become active after the ph goes below 4. The citric acid in soda activates them. That's how Pepsicola got its name, and why it was developed in the first place by NC pharmacist Caleb Bradham at the end of the 19th century.

HOWEVER, it provably does wear away enamel on teeth, and THAT whether I stated it or not, was my main point.

I'll help you out here: You did NOT state it, but it's equally invalid. Citric acid does rot teeth enamel, but only if you hold the soda in your mouth for several weeks without swallowing. Otherwise, another of the properties in saliva is that it contains mucus, which coats everything. So not much you put into your mouth actually comes into direct contact with teeth. People get cavities from food scraps, among other things. Sounds to me like you took biochemistry in HS, and you think that entitles you to lable yourself a "peon." Save your next response (where you claim a graduate degree) for somebody who cares. I find myself explaining very basic concepts to you. And I certainly did not go to graduate school.

And thanks for monitoring the threads so closely and determing what is relevant to say and what isn’t/ Ain’t free speech great?

I wish I didn't have to. The problem here is that you addressed your original (and factually incorrect) post to ME. I know the truth hurts. Deal with it. And take your old wives tales somewhere else.

doc has checked it a couple times, says its normal.

Good to know. Your thyroid can kill you if you let it. The NY Mets are about to put their second best player on the shelf for the first month of the season because of a minor thyroid issue.

But really I don't GAF what you do either, "but thanks for the update all the same."

Here's the difference doctor: You addressed your stupidity to ME. Otherwise, my life would be a lot richer right now, because I never would have heard of you.

IMO, drinking lots of soda pop contributes to eventual health problems.

And you base that opinion on what evidence?
