Obamacare passed
The Charleston Daily Mail ^ | March 19, 2010 | Don Surber

Posted on 03/19/2010 11:41:40 AM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

I hate to tell readers this, but Obamacare passed on Thursday at 2:22 PM.

That was when the House approved the Slaughter solution 222-203.

A vote for Slaughter was a vote for Obamacare. It did not “barely” pass because a few of those abstentions and maybe a couple of the Nos were green-lighted by the party’s leadership.

The stories about the House votes all get the math wrong.

It is not about how many votes Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco needs — it is about how many votes she can shed.

Pelosi is going to pass it 216-215 if she can, allowing more than 30 Democrats (mainly Blue Dogs) off the hook. They will be granted Indulgences by Pope Pelosi to officially vote against it so they can keep their seats.

Willie Brown, the longest serving speaker in California’s history, explained all this in his November 15 column in the San Francisco Chronicle: “If there’s one thing the recent health care vote proves, it’s that Nancy Pelosi is the most focused House speaker since Tip O’Neill. I’m not talking about the merits of the bill that emerged from the House – the debate on that subject is far from over. I’m talking about Pelosi’s behind-the-scenes leadership to get the job done in such a way that at-risk Democrats can still win re-election.

“The pundits portrayed the 220-215 tally and 39 Democratic no votes as signs of Pelosi’s weakness. What they missed was that Pelosi got her majority while letting Democrats from conservative districts off the hook. Nancy knows that the first thing on every Democratic House member’s mind is getting re-elected. In turn, as speaker, her first and foremost job is to ensure they get re-elected.

“She also knows that the most important vote they cast once they are re-elected will be to keep her as speaker. And if that means letting them be a Republican now and then, so be it. That’s not weakness, that’s politics.”

Jeff Zeleny of the New York Times is the only reporter I know of who gets it. He reported: “But as the week inches along, with momentum steadily building to a Sunday vote, the party leaders are also beginning to decide which politically endangered lawmakers will be given absolution to vote no.”

Politics is an art, not a science. It requires little brains, but much cleverness.

It is about power and Mrs. Pelosi wields it well.

The one remaining hurdle for Obamacare — and it could be 20 stories high — is whether Obamacare passes muster under the second paragraph of Section 7 of Article I of the Constitution: “Every Bill which shall have passed the House of Representatives and the Senate, shall, before it become a Law, be presented to the President of the United States; if he approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. If after such Reconsideration two thirds of that House shall agree to pass the Bill, it shall be sent, together with the Objections, to the other House, by which it shall likewise be reconsidered, and if approved by two thirds of that House, it shall become a Law. But in all such Cases the Votes of both Houses shall be determined by Yeas and Nays, and the Names of the Persons voting for and against the Bill shall be entered on the Journal of each House respectively. If any Bill shall not be returned by the President within ten Days (Sundays excepted) after it shall have been presented to him, the Same shall be a Law, in like Manner as if he had signed it, unless the Congress by their Adjournment prevent its Return, in which Case it shall not be a Law.”

In order to make budget reconciliation in the Senate, you need a law. The Senate passed the bill. The House must adopt it and then the president must sign it into law for the Senate to revise it without a cloture vote.

If there is any change — even one word — in the House version from the Senate version, you might not have a law.

Because those of us that are going to be stuck paying for this are at our jobs.

So true.... This will be the 5th darn Tea party event, plus town halls plus calls, meetings and emails. I wanted to spend time with my family tomorrow and do some yard work but I feel it is important to go to DC. Yes, you are exactly right the only reason conservatives are not there is because liberals don't work and we do!!!"

Dear American men,

Sack DC...tell them to retire or hang.

It is your duty and obligation.

Signed, your loving wives and children

And as much as this guy wants to be a pundit, IF Pelosi had 216 for any bill ( even the Slaughter dance) she would have just voted that. Truth is there are still folks on the fence ( ie waiting to see which way the crap statrs to roll)...

Also, it's not as if everyone doesn't already know that certain members get cover to vote against or for something to protect themselves at home.

exactly. I don’t know if this will pass ( I suspect yes) But darn it we all ought to be acting like stopping it depends on me and me alone. Then when everyone acts like that ,together, we will be unstoppable.

I’m confused.

I understand the slaughter house passed Thursday and if the democrats use it, then Obamacare has effectively passed unless the consitutional challenges stop it.

What then are the democrats voting on this weekend?

NO THEY DIDN'T!!!

Grrr.. this is getting frustrating. There has been NO VOTE on the so-called "Slaughter Solution". This was a preemptive (and not expected to pass) tactic by the GOP to preclude the "Slaughter solution" from even being introduced.

Regardless of how they eventually intend to vote on "Slaughter", members of the majority generally get their hackles up when the minority tries to force rules. The fact that it didn't fail on a nearly straight party-line vote shows how weak the Democrats' position is.

If process doesn’t matter, and the Constitution isn’t worth the paper it is written on, our options become infinite.

If Obamacare had REALLY passed, as the author of this article claims, we would be hearing nothing but Breaking News butt-ins on TV since Thursday afternoon.

He must be doing one of those push things liberals like to do just before an election is decided in order to make it appear as though their side is ahead.

I don't buy it. If this were already a done deal then Zero would not have cancelled his Asia trip

He canceled it so he can sign the bill and send it to the Senate to pass the "fix" before the Easter recess. That may not happen w the planned GOP delay tricks, but that is his reason.

Right after spending the morning at the abortion clinic prayer vigil. Since I printed up a shirt which says “Don’t make the mistake I made”, I feel that my witness there is important too.

I wanted to spend time with my family tomorrow and do some yard work but I feel it is important to go to DC.

No kidding. I've written, called, appeared in person multiple times since last summer and my house is falling down around my ears because I just don't have any more time. I am exhausted, and I am livid at all the summer soldiers telling everyone else to go, but they're too busy. SO AM I, dammit!!!

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more.

If they “secretly” had the votes for this mess, the vote would have already been taken and the thing passed. The Slaughter nonsense would be out along with the rest of the fraud and deceit. A hell of a lot can happen in DC in a few days and Hussein and the rest of the radical, fascist left would NOT take any chances if they had the enslavement of the American people in their hands.

Sorry, but these Deems can't be this stupid. They have to know that their re-election chances in November already are slim, regardless of what happens with this monstrosity. They aren't being let off the hook, they are being led to the gallows.

Hang in there... I feel the same way. I love my wife and kids, I love my God and I love my Freedom. I remember watching “The Patriot” 2-3 years ago and thinking to myself “That really stinks that this guy has to be away from his family for all this time...” it was strange that thought went through my mind, I think God was telling me something. Then I went on to thinking... “I guess for freedom it has to be done...”

Without freedom I won’t be able to spend time with my family, enjoy my life or Worship God when and where I want. Yup, a day here and there certainly is a small price to pay in the entire scope of things.

I am sick , like you feels like a big knot in my stomach. I’m trying not to worry. Once we’ve done all we know to do, trust God, stand back and watch Him fight our battles. I have faith that He is in control. No matter what we see, or how we feel, doesn’t change that. Pray, just pray!!!
