North Koreans fear the country is on the verge of a new famine

North Koreans fear the country is on the verge of a new famine

Jane Macartney, Tumen

Once again, rice has disappeared from tables in North Korea. A famine looms and — as happened in the 1990s — millions could die.

Desperation is stamped on the faces of those few who have braved barbed-wire fences, armed guards and patrols to slip into neighbouring China. They seek food over freedom.

The Times met four women in a safe house in China this week who fled recently across the frontier. They described despair in North Korea at the growing prospect of starvation in the Stalinist state. The youngest, only 16, crossed the frozen river last month. The other three, in their 50s, left last year and were tight-lipped about how they got out because they must go back to help the families they left behind.

While snow falls outside, Choi Kum Ok squats on the floor of an anonymous apartment not far from the border. Her eyes fill with tears as she talks of the son she had to leave behind. “I came over to earn money for his medical care. I need to get him food or he will starve.”

She covers her face and sobs as she remembers the 1990s, when harvests failed and up to 10 per cent of the population starved. She lost a sibling. “I don’t want to talk about it,” she says.

A former security guard and member of the elite ruling Workers' Party, she cannot understand how the leaders that she still worships could have failed their people so completely.

The Chicoms could raise my estimation of them considerably by going in there and cleaning house.

More names to be added to the Death Book of Communism. I really do not understand how any rational person can be a self-described Marxist when one sees the results on the Korean peninsula.

A new famine?

When did the old one end?

Maybe they could relieve some of their Taiwan angst by invading NK, then everyone would be happy.

That is true. Every year, the sick and infirm die due to lack of food. Only that this time around, Chia Head shot himself in the foot and made things worse. More will die of starvation this year than in previous several years. The current estimate of starvation deaths appears to be about a few thousands, based on stories coming out of N. Korea in a last couple of months.

The U.N. HQ should move there. Problem solved.

The bear rally(spurred by ‘stimulus food’ from outside) is over, and the second dip of the double-dip is beginning.

I can't help but think that when N. Korea finally falls, we will all be appalled by the stories that emanate from there and wish that we had done more to hasten that regime's demise - not unlike those who were left to wonder if they could have done more to stop the Holocaust. Truly that nation is a hell on Earth.

I will say it again as I have in other starving North Korean posts.

Instead of shipping them food air drop a few hundred thousand small handguns with extra magazines and ammo so at least the North Korean population has a fighting chance to take their country back from the insane ones running it.

They are completely brain-washed. There was an article recently posted here by Hitchens (I think) about NK. It was astonishing! Just did a search, and couldn’t find it.

This is an example of how socialism/government doesn’t work.

Show this to idiot democrat/marxists who want this for America.

Democrats/Marxists are putting the U.S. on the road to becoming

why has no government ever created a product we can hold in our hands? because they can’t create a quality product efficiently and once we the people hold the government cell phone in our hand we will know that it is trash and so that government/socialism doesn’t work and that government idiots should not be allowed to do a damn thing as now they have fooled us into allowing them to do $3.4 trillion dollars per year worth of government programs which produce nothing , no quality products , not a damn thing.

And then you add the trillions of dollars that local, city, county, parish, state, governments waste in the same way.

no government, be it local, city, state, federal can compete with a for profit private company in producing tangible products we can hold in our hands. government can’t produce cars, cell phones, electronic products, tvs, computers, washing machines, nothing and if they try it will be trash and be done thousands of times less efficiently than private for profit companies can.

Why are democrats/marxists/liberals so dumb they can’t see this?

Kim and his thugs laugh at us saying “look it worked again, we let a few hundred thousand superfluous people starve and the west sends us more food to feed our army.”

“They seek food over freedom. “

No, they seek food, and relatively more freedom. PRAY FOR THEM.
