The first lady's remark about avoiding the news at home is an unfortunate example of suburban escapism
When Michelle Obama told Mike Huckabee a few weeks ago in an interview on Fox News Channel that her home was a "news-free zone," she wasn't just reflecting a desire to filter and ignore news we don't want to hear. Her statement, to my ear, also represented the culmination of the suburbanization of the American mind. And that's bad news for our future.
I'm not about to launch into a righteous diatribe against the intellectual shallowness or soullessness of suburbia. I won't play the role of sophisticated urbanite, not least because I couldn't pull it off. I'm a proud product of suburbia. I know its charms and its demons, and all in all, I'm pleased to have spent my childhood there.

All liar-pig DemocRATs must go.
Oregon State was going to fire its basketball coach Craig Robinson. But after the school got $17M in Stimulus Money they signed him to a two year contract. Craig Robinson is Michell Obama’s brother.
I have to take a break from the news now and then or my head will explode. But I have a feeling Michelle keeps her home a “news free zone” because she’s afraid some truths about her and her hubby will be spoken.
What a racist article.
Don’t know why, but anything that is even slightly negative towards any of the Obamas is inherently racist.
Eventually the "news free zone" will trip up the Obamas just like it did Musolini!
I read the thread title too quickly. I thought they had designated Manchelle’s fat ass as a ‘No Parking Zone’!
I was thinking they don't want any pictures of her fat ass for the people to see while she's doing her fat tsar gig.
Ma oui, Michelle, you do remind me a little of Marie Antoinette.
What news media do I read...? Let's just say "more than the Obamas."
THE STIMULUS AT WORK
Some have said that the stimulus hasn’t saved any jobs, but here is a case where at least one job was saved. Oregon State University Athletic Director Bob DeCarolis was considering firing their basketball coach, Craig Robinson, after an 8-11 start (2-5 in the Pac 10 conference). When word of this reached Washington, Undersecretary of Education Martha Kanter was dispatched to Corvallis with $17 million in stimulus money for the university. Craig Robinson’s job is safe for this year. For those of you unfamiliar with Coach Robinson, he just so happens to be Michelle Obama’s brother. Just a coincidence I’m sure!
