Can a pope resign from office? (You know Obama's fingerprints are all over this.)
BBC News ^ | 27 March 2010

The possibility has been raised that Pope Benedict XVI should resign over the snowballing paedophile priest scandal in the Catholic Church. The BBC's Vatican correspondent, David Willey, examines the question.

In theory, there is nothing to stop Pope Benedict taking a piece of paper out of his writing desk and drafting a letter of resignation to hand to the College of Cardinals, the supreme electoral body of the Catholic Church.

If Rahm can take out a pope, he can do anything.

I can just see the smug looks on their faces...

The Pope battles against a tougher enemy than 0 or Rahm every day. They are gnats to him.

The general lack of respect for all non Muslim religions in play is more like it.

Popes have abdicated in the past (I think the last one was maybe in the 13th century). I hope this one doesn’t.

St. Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle...

Stop right now and say a prayer for the Holy Father.

Only one Pope has ever resigned (Celestine V back in 1294), and that was because he never wanted to be Pope in the first place.

The evil that is secular humanism has infected the Catholic Church and Pope Benedict XVI will stay and fight it.

This makes me sick to my stomach. The powerful Church liberals - all Obamamites, such as many bishops and the awful “theologian” that is currently the ambassador to the Vatican - are probably behind this at least as much as Rahm.

Remember that the Pope’s first address, he asked us to pray for him, that he not “run away when the wolf was coming” - very prescient words.

That said, I hope he has a food taster, because they will stop at nothing to get rid of him.

Ok - I give up - precisely why is it that you believe obama is behind this effort??

say a prayer for the holy Father? Pretty sure God doesn’t need prayers for him. Pray to Jesus Christ for a return to freedom, and nobody else. The catholic religion is just that a religion. Born again Christain is where you want to be for salvation. the pope has as much authority over anything as anyone else, I fail to see how I should care what would happen to him.

“Psst. Wanna hear a rumor I’m starting.”

Do you mean this rumor?

"The possibility has been raised that Pope Benedict XVI should resign over the snowballing paedophile priest scandal in the Catholic Church."

I didn't start it. The BBC started it.

Why would the BBC fabricate such a story from whole cloth?

So the newspaper of Henry VIII's church starts spreading rumors that the Pope is going to resign, and talks about Pius VII writing a letter saying that "if he were to be kidnapped by the Nazis he was to be considered to have resigned, and a successor should be chosen."

Hmmmm... I can see the connection. Does the BBC have some insider information that maybe somebody wants to kidnap the Pope? If so, why are they keeping it to themselves?

I just mentioned that quote of the Pope’s in another thread. The wolves are here, both inside and outside the gate. He is in great need of prayer, but I know that God is with him.

If the Pope is replaced I will wager he will be a Pope for all people in other words, a Muslim.

Popes can resign, but they just don’t.

Sickness, scandal, crushing political defeats, it doesn’t matter. They stick it out no matter what befalls him.

Popes are also very traditional and steeped in precedent.

I cannot see any situation where Benedict XVI will even consider abdication.

"such as many bishops and the awful “theologian” that is currently the ambassador to the Vatican"

Most of those liberal bishops (and cardinals) come from the US, which is what makes me so sick.

You can walk into many US parishes and see "social justice" advocacy just as prevalent as you might find in the nearby black churches.
