Force of Darkness “Earth Hour” Challenged by Power of Light “Human Achievement Hour”
Competitive Enterprise Institute ^ | 3/19/10 | Richard Morrison

Posted on 03/27/2010 9:00:50 AM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

he Competitive Enterprise Institute, a leading free-market think tank, will celebrate the Second Annual “Human Achievement Hour” between 8:30pm and 9:30pm on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The one-hour celebration coincides with “Earth Hour,” an hour in which governments, individuals, and corporations will dim or shut off lights to symbolically renounce the environmental impacts of modern technology. “Earth Hour’s creators suggest that human inventions and technology are a problem, but we see the ability to create and innovate as the ultimate resource,” says Human Achievement Hour founder and CEI Policy Analyst Michelle Minton. “Environmental challenges will not be solved by turning off our lights and symbolically hiding in the dark,” Minton added. “If anything, we should be looking to technology and innovation to help solve environmental problems.”

Just like last year, countless individuals, organizations, agencies and businesses will be celebrating Human Achievement Hour without even realizing it. Just by not shutting down their lights, operations and stores, they will be acknowledging that productive effort and the pursuit of happiness are a better alternative than sitting in the dark.

In addition to the observance of Human Achievement Hour, wherever people may find themselves around the world, CEI will be hosting a happy hour event outside of Washington, D.C.

I like it. The state of a civilization can be measured by how much energy they consume per capita. The more energy consumed, the higher the level of civilization.

I will spend Earth Hour welding/grinding/fabricating on my gas guzzling Off-road 4x4.

Afterward, I will dine upon the roasted flesh of a Spotted Owl - barbecued over carbon-belching coals; burnt scraps of lumber harvested from an old growth forest.

And for dessert - Bambie’s glazed eyeballs, broiled in the heat of a 1000 watt halogen spotlight.

For those of us unable to participate as you do (I don’t have a 4X4), turning on all exterior lighting will have to be sufficient.

I used to work at an energy research institute and we produced that graph in the early 80s. It showed GDP vs. energy consumption through time and for different nations. The correlation was very strong.

Last year on “earth hour,” I turned on every light, every appliance, and every other electrical thing inside and outside my home to celebrate. Why not celebrate the light, rather than the darkness, was my thought. I’ll do it again this year.

I am planning to turn on all lights inside and out. I will blare load Patriotic music off my back porch and eat pulled pork sandwiches with my favorite brewski. I hope I piss off all my liberal neighbors off completely.

Excellent! I agree completely. “Energy conservation” only limits the economy and technology progress.

Innovation and new technologies should be pursued to satisfy the ever increasing energy need, which is the sign of progress and prosperity.

How about nuclear energy, clean, cheap — France gets 80% of their electricity from nuclear, why can’t we and others do the same, instead of raising rates and demanding that we keep turning off lights?

Will Las Vegas turn off their lights?

Will Reno turn off their lights?

Will Disneyworld/Land turn off their lights?

Will Hollywood turn out the lights on their sign?

Will Burbon street follow suit?

Will Broadway turn out THEIR lights on a Saturday night?????

Will ballparks go dark?

Will BB games be played in the dark?

I could go on and on but the idea you get.

Why stop at just one hour? It might make an impression if the power companies shut off the power for a week or so. We can call it 18th century history awareness week.

After they clean up the bodies form riots, food poisonings, accidents, and hospital shutdowns a little Co2 won’t look so bad.

What this “debate” needs is some perspective. If power companies go on strike, American will grind to a halt. May not change all the lefties, but the sheep following them might just get their heads out of their collective rear ends.

Yes! And they’d better turn off all the lights in all the arenas where basketball games or victory celebrations are happening tonight, LOL!

Go, Butler! Wa-Hoo!!

Just turned on the porch lights, and the light in the attic. Got a bonfire going, the woodburner in the pole barn is fired up AND...I just turned up the thermostat.

*SMIRK*

What a bunch of foolish Hippies. Give it a rest, Kids. You’ve got ‘Your Man in Washington’ right now, LOL! He’s busy ‘Burning The Midnight Oil’ signing Recess Appointments that are going to screw America (and YOU!) over beyond YOUR wildest socialist dreams!
