Arab League eyes alternatives to peace process

(Reuters) - Arab states should prepare for the possibility that the Palestinian-Israeli peace process may be a total failure and come up with alternatives, Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa said on Saturday.

The troubled peace process suffered a setback this month when the Palestinians said indirect talks with the Israelis would not take place unless Israel canceled a decision to build 1,600 new homes in a settlement near east Jerusalem.

Further underscoring the obstacles to reviving negotiations, two Israeli soldiers and a Palestinian were killed in a clash in the Gaza strip on Friday, the bloodiest fighting in the enclave in 14 months.

Moussa did not say what the alternatives to the peace process might be, but one option is to revive an eight-year-old initiative under which Arab states would normalize ties with the Jewish state in exchange for Israeli concessions on territory.

Speaking to Arab leaders at a summit of the Arab League in the Libyan town of Sirte, Moussa said a fresh approach was needed.

"We have to study the possibility that the peace process will be a complete failure," Moussa said. "It's time to face Israel. We have to have alternative plans because the situation has reached a turning point.

I find it amazing that these Arab States can be taken seriously as players in this game if they refuse to normalize ties with Israel and recognize Israel's right to exist. Except for Egypt, most have NEVER done that! Until they do there is NO reason for Israel to treat with them.

From Reuters: “...talks with the Israelis would not take place unless Israel canceled a decision to build 1,600 new homes in a settlement near east Jerusalem”

From Netanyahu: “ “As far as we are concerned, building in Jerusalem is like building in Tel Aviv,” and there would be no restrictions...”

Now the construction in question is going on either in Jerusalem or near Jerusalem, and I’m not there, so I sure don’t know which.

But if there’s a conflict between the truth and something that makes Isreal look bad, I also sure don’t trust Reuters.

That eight year old initiative demands the Right of Return for Palestinians and explicitly forbids the right of return for the 580,000 Jews who fled Arab League countries in the decades of and after WWII...

As of this month, the 580,000 who fled and their descendants are officially recognized by the government of Israel as aggrieved parties in these talks and the Arabs have not yet been confronted with this at an official negotiation.

This Israeli coverage feels like a PR campaign by the state controlled media, just like the “out of control” TEA party protesters or the Toyota recalls felt like a PR campaign. It’s not just Reuters.

Well, Obama has made this situation a whole lot worse. It is a lot easier to act tough with an ally than it is against the enemy. The Obama administration looks completely ill-informed on this issue.

It’s long past time for those entities to recognize
Israel, had they done so many years ago things
would be a lot better now.

They should tell the palestinians to suck it up and be
good Israeli citizens and build a life for themselves
and their children.

Never happen though, they’ll keep screwing with the
jews until they get their ass handed to them for the
umteenth time.

If it were up to me, I’d declare greater Israel from
the jordan to the sea and tough if you don’t like it,
accept it or leave, go to Egypt or Jordan, see how much
they want your whinny ass.
My patience is nill as far as palestinian wants go, they
have had every opportunity handed to them and have
refused and screwed over everyone who has tried to
help them.
Gaza should be bulldozed and jewish resorts built there.

Arab League eyes alternatives to peace process
They tried it in 1967. This time, I suggest Israel take Amman, Damascus, Cairo, and Arab occupied Medina/Yathrib. Then negotiate for peace.

I have an alternative to the peace process. The Arabs ought to start building their countries. They ought to allow their people the freedom and opportunity to be creative and productive. Rather than every Arab country being an open sewer, maybe if you build something, you won’t want to see that much destruction.
