Officials in the city of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., who had ordered participants of a home Bible study either to purchase an unobtainable city permit to meet or shut down, now are relenting a little.
City officials have said the Bible study targeted earlier for banishment can continue to meet, but they are reserving the right to shut down other Bible studies...

I can’t link to the story (hate going to wnd anyway) but sheesh. They want us to buy permits to associate in our own homes to read the Bible? That violates the first amendment in a whole lot of ways.
How is this not a straight assault on church/state religious issues?
Yep, their ordinance specifically spells out Christians and bible studies from what I’ve read.
What ‘right’ does government have? Are we back in the “divine right of kings” era? That ended with Israel’s last earthly king. Government derives its authority from the consent of the governed. These people are all kinds of wrong, and they need to be shown. Politely, or by show of force.
Do people who have parties in their homes have to get permits? What business is it of the government’s how many visitors a home-owner has, and how often?
Not good enough on the city’s part. The threat to close them down needs to be removed completely!
Sounds like a program to distribute crack to bible study groups.
“What business is it of the governments how many visitors a home-owner has, and how often?”
Your question is rhetorical but does it envision dozens of cars coming in and out of a residential area to attend a weekly rap music clinic conducted in a private home?
There is a dozens-car party in our neighborhood on the order of every week. I don’t know whether there are Bibles being read or rap being performed. Why is it this relevant?
Weird title.
I meant, “Why is it relevant?”
The preacher came over to the neighbors and asked us if he was causing a problem with his visitors and I said we didn't mind. They could park in my driveway for all I care, just as long as they leave one space for me.
Californians are a bit different. They narc off their unknown neighbors to their superiors -- I mean, the 'authorities' -- if they perceive a problem ...

If this is the same town that banned the small group Bible study, they also banned religious groups from having pot luck dinners at private homes or meetings at private homes with over three people attending

Are they disturbing the peace?
Personally, I wouldn't have any more problem with that than I do the weekly extended-family get together my neighbors have. They can get pretty loud when they're barbecuing. :)

If you do not feel that your neighbors are violating your right to the peaceful enjoyment of your home, then you are truly a saint, or your neighbors are. Others are not so fortunate. That’s why cities and states pass ordinances regulating activities that can disturb others.
If the city intended to actively discriminate against a Christian gathering, then they are in violation of the First Amendment. If they are trying to regulate a residential neighborhood for the benefit of ALL the neighbors, then they have a responsibility to act.
I own a small home-based business. I must obtain a city permit and if my business grows to the point that increased traffic becomes disturbing to my neighbors, I can be instructed to move the business to a commercial space. I have no problem with that and long for the day.
