Report: 6 dead in W. Va. coal mine blast 21 unaccounted for; emergency crews on the scene BREAKING NEWS msnbc.com staff and news service reports updated less than 1 minute ago CHARLESTON, W.Va. - An explosion at an underground West Virginia coal mine on Monday killed at least six people and left 21 unaccounted for, a state mining official said.

The accident happened around 4:30 Monday afternoon at Massey Energy's Upper Big Branch mine in Raleigh County, about 30 miles south of Charleston.

The West Virginia state police confirmed an "incident," but had no further information.

You have to be so careful with a mine with gas....ventilation is key..I mean fresh air is a must!!Something went wrong. This is bad very bad..Prayers for the miners and their families. Something could of happened and the men knew noting about it till it was too late.

These guys really are all heroes. You can’t even imagine the danger they face every day, yet like soldiers, they love what they do and wouldn’t want to do anything else. I’ve heard it from their own lips.

Miners are a special group of men!!!! I mean like a band of brothers. Rescue crews are on their way to help. There is so much that depends on where then explosion was and where the other miners were. You have crews in other sections of the mine. As a former miner this is very emotional for me. My family from the 1800’s has been in mining. Prayers for all concerned!
