Disappointment as US high school students snub 'lesbian-friendly prom'

Senior prom fell far short of the rite of passage Constance McMillen was hoping for when she began a legal battle to challenge a ban on same-sex dates.

The 18-year-old lesbian student said that she was one of only seven students to show up at a private party chaperoned by school officials. She said the rest of her peers went to another private event where she wasn't invited.

"It was not the prom I imagined," she said. "It really hurts my feelings. These are still people who I've gone through school with, even teachers who loved me before this all started. I've never been a bad student and I don't feel like I deserve to be put through this."

Her case drew a national spotlight after she and the American Civil Liberties Union challenged an Itawamba County School District rule that banned same-sex prom dates and a requirement that only male students wear tuxedos. Proms are parties held for students, generally in their senior year in high school.

The ACLU sent a demand letter to Superintendent Teresa McNeece in February, saying the rules against same-sex prom dates and girls wearing tuxedos violated Miss McMillen's constitutional rights. The district responded by withdrawing its sponsorship and cancelling the April 2 event.

In an apparent compromise, school district officials said parents would organise a private event with school chaperones that Miss McMillen could attend.

Funny they all knew to give Constance the “country club” line but could go themselves.

The mailing rules could have been bent if an office staffer was in on it and was supplied stamped envelopes to address and mail.

If that was actually written by a student, then IAHS does appear to be a good high school.

I wonder what their Civics teachers are like.

They did not “send” them anywhere. The school had the prom in the normal location at the normal time in the normal manner. The rest of the school “chose” to go somewhere else. Do you want the school to be able to “order” the rest of the students to show up at the prom and to have an “authorized” good time?

I will not knowingly “fellowship” with people in open sin. I will try to be friendly to them and tell them about my Lord and Saviour, but I will not go to their bars to reach them, I will not go to the strip clubs or porno theaters or clubs to reach them. And I will not send my children into the wolfs den to try and teach them how to be sheep.

It would not BE love to ask Constance (in drag, with female partner) to a prom.

The problem is we outsiders have no way of knowing if the other 6 were invited or not invited. As I pointed out, there were parents who volunteered to help organize and decorate. It makes sense that the children of these parents would attend the prom their parents helped organize. And that is assuming that the parents who organized the party HAD kids in the school

Actually, despite my belief that homosexuality is always a sin ... I think this is absolutely terrible. ... Hate the sin, not the sinner;

How in the world is this "hate?" The girl Constance SUED her school... with the resulted in the school CANCELING the prom (talk about hateful!), rather than spend the money to fight the lawsuit.

The kids in the class then took initiative and voluntarily arranged for their own party--since Constance had (hatefully, I think) killed their prom. Then, after this was arranged, the school decided to go ahead anyhow--and the kids in the class who had already arranged the other party said "stuff it" to the ACLU forced prom in the fancy country club.

Constance and her prom got rejected because she went to law--NOT because of her chosen sexual perversion.

When people go to court--they really cannot whine if they get treated as a social outcast by those they chose to sue.

>> Godly love takes the form of saying no when we are asked to normalize sinful conduct.

I’ve been to a prom (though its been a while). I’d venture to say that much “sinful conduct” was likely “normalized” at a party with 300 college-bound high schoolers. If their intent was cast out sinners, or even just sexual sinners ... I doubt there would’ve been all that many attendees.

“Remove the plank from your own eye ...” It is not the responsibility of individual Christians to punish for sins.

And we’re not hearing of any of their complaints of being left behind, which would be something that a pro-Constance news agenda would want to highlight (look, those students are so snobby they even abandoned 6 of their own).

>> what some think is the most important day of their life RUINED

Constance is a selfish jerk, no doubt ... but, nobody outside of high school actually thinks this.

SnakeDoc,

By your logic, children that go to private schools are sinning even more, since many of their parents have chosen not to associate with the public schools that teach homosexuality is normal.

Actually, from the article In an apparent compromise, school district officials said parents would organise a private event with school chaperones that Miss McMillen could attend.

The official prom was the one with the school chaperones. The article further states It's unclear who organized the other dance, said Kristy Bennett, ACLU Mississippi legal director.

Could’ve been a threesome. That’s next on the degenerates list. Why can’t 3 people get married to each other?

Well...we don't know that the six other attendees weren’t invited to the other location. Maybe they were taking the stand they wanted to take by going to the event that the Constance girl demanded, a “lesbian friendly” prom.

I would have to humbly disagree with you. I do agree with “hate the sin and not the sinner” and “only the non-sinner should cast the first stone”. These are basic biblical principles.

However, the bible also states that we should not tolerate, accept, or condone the sinful acts of others nor should we support the sin, lest we intentionally or unintentional encourage or lead someone into sin or continued sin. Even Jesus rebuked the Pharisees for hypcrisy and the merchants that used the temple for a market (Jesus didn’t show tolerance since he over-turned the merchants’ tables, but he did forgive them).

The bible teaches forgiveness of sin and love of the person; not tolerance or acceptance of the sin. This notion that Christianity teaches tolerance and acceptance of sinful behavior is a fallacy pushed by the liberals in order to label Christians as hypocrites.

With that being said, this lesbian wanted to exert her 1st amendment rights and gain her 15-minutes of fame at the expense of the rest of her classmates. According to the lesbian’s own admission, the only reason she even pushed the issue is because she wanted to make a statement. Her selfish motivations were further proven by her appearance on several talk shows like Wanda Sikes & Ellen Degeneres. If the lesbian was truly only concerned about equality and considered the feelings of her classmates then she certaintly could have fought her battle with a lot more discretion.

Since the dress code required all girls to wear dresses and all guys to wear tuxes, regardless of sexual preference, I don’t think this showed any discrimination. However, she did fought the standards without considering the feelings or consequences of her classmates. She has no reason now to complain because she got her prom and she got to wear her tux. Unfortunately, everyone exercised their Constitutional rights and chose not to associate or tolerate her selfish, attention-seeking behavior.

..and how NICE of Constance to look around at the others there and ditch after 30 minutes.

So, she didn’t get her way, get over it, life happens.

If you try generalizing to all sin, nobody would have the right to rebuke anybody; not even YOU.

Suffice it to not be engrossed in homosexuality to qualify the Christian to cast this mote out of anyone else’s eye.
