Reporter's notebook: What really happens at Tea Party rallies
CNN ^ | April 7, 2010 | Shannon Travis

(CNN) -- When it comes to the Tea Party movement, the stereotypes don't tell the whole story.

Here's what you often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: offensive posters blasting President Obama and Democratic leaders; racist rhetoric spewed from what seems to be a largely white, male audience; and angry protesters rallying around the Constitution.

Case in point: During the health care debate last month, opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. The incidents made national headlines, and they provided Tea Party opponents with fodder to question the movement.

But here's what you don't often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: Patriotic signs professing a love for country; mothers and fathers with their children; African-Americans proudly participating; and senior citizens bopping to a hip-hop rapper.

Last week, I saw all of this during a five-city Western swing as the Tea Party Express national tour made its way across the country. CNN was along for the ride, and I was charged with planning CNN's coverage for five stops in two states: St. George, Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah; and Grand Junction and Denver, Colorado.

... so no need to read any further. That's a LIE and BrietBart is offering $100,000 if they can PROVE the LIE.

Context is your friend

The dreaded “nuance”(as way to dodge facing facts) strikes again huh?

This is what you said, and I quote:
“I’m sure, in fact, that there are a few idiots in the Tea Party rallies who would and probably did do exactly what was alleged

Just provide the evidence will you?

And that’s what’s going to happen here, everyone is going to start to believe the falsehood.”

Yes, I'm speculating -- but very confident I'm correct. There are idiots everywhere, including in the Tea Party rallies.

But here's the deal. You folks are working very, VERY hard to miss the real point here, which is that the media are busy creating your public image for you, and you have no way to fight back.

The Tea Party movement is going to find it self marginalized as a bunch of loons, unless and until it can get some sort of centralized structure in place to manage a coherent message.

All you've got now is energy ... which is great, except that it's not focused. In politics, unfocused energy belongs to whoever can put their own spin on it -- even your opponents -- which is what you see happening now.

Our friend “r9etb” already has....

... told you what you need to do if the Tea Party movement is not to get written off as a bunch of racist loons. You're just being stupid now.

It is a lie and yes, I'm sure. We were there.

No racist epithet used against any black congressmen when they walked through the Tea Party protesters at the capitol.
You claim there was such an occurrence, you prove it.
And hey? There is $100,000 waiting for ya if you can provide the evidence.
You don't have the evidence, you stop making the accusations.

Uh, no. It's a way of telling you that you somehow failed to understand the point being made.

But hell ... you go on ahead and let CNN create your image for you, pal, and keep crying because they're "lying." As long as you keep doing that, you and your Tea Party friends are going to come out looking like a bunch of loons.

Unless you can find some way to present a coherent message to the public. And that means giving up your stupid insistence on being a bunch decentralized, un-coordinated protest rallies.

This is politics, FRiend, and in politics the battle goes to those who are organized.

Right by the fellows in question, the entire time, right? Standing guard, checking for lies all day..... Wow. That's a big relief.

Someone else added $250,000 to that $100,000. Wished I’d bookmarked it.

Maybe someone else can name who did that.

The point you were making was clear enough, and I quote:

Show us the proof. No such thing ocured. Period!

I was standing maybe three feet from where they say it happened. It’s a lie.

I did a quick search, which usually yields up the email if it is available, and didn’t come up with anything.

You could put a comment on the actual cnn blog.

Just think about it for a minute. Here we have a bunch of reporters from MSNBC, CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC who really hate the Tea Parties, all of them armed with high powered video cameras which recorded every second of that walk by the black congressmen, yet not even one tape has emerged of any Tea Partier making a racist attack on any of the black congressmen . Do you think such a tape would not have come out long ago, if this racist slur did indeed occuer?
It just doesn't make any sense.

The whole time? Never, ever, could have happened? You were watching and listening to what was said to them?

I don't believe you're lying, but I don't think you can be as sure as you want me to think you are.

They were listening for it. You were not.

Uh, neither of these things happened CNN. There is no video, no audio, or anything that backs up these slurs, and both sides had video and audio of that occasion.

CNN = A-wipes.

Not only that, the congress critters were using their cell phones to video the event as they were walking. Where’s the film? Me and a lot of other’s are probably on it and nothing like that happened. It does make me angry when the media continues to repeat this slander.

God LORD man -- GET A CLUE.

Did you not just confirm my point?

All those reporters are making your public image for you. "Boo hoo," cries SmokingJoe, "they're lying." Well, that's just too bad, isn't it?

Are you gonna do something practical about it? Or are you just gonna snipe at me some more, as if that made a difference?

God LORD man — GET A CLUE

You bellowed?

Did you not just confirm my point? “

I just DISproved your point.

All those reporters are making your public image for you.”

/sarc Yeah..that's why the Tea Parties are polling better than 0bama in today's poll, despite all the best efforts of the lamestream media.
Tea Party 48% Obama 44%”

They are defining nuthin’.

Are you gonna do something practical about it?”

As it turns out, we are already winning. The lamestream media don't control the news anymore.

Or are you just gonna snipe at me some more, as if that made a difference?”

You made the accusation. You prove it.
