"I Apologize" McDonnell Issues Apology (VA)
WashPost ^ | April 7, 2010

Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) apologized late Wednesday for failing to include slavery in his proclamation declaring April as Confederate History Month. The full text of his statement follows:

Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today regarding the proclamation of Confederate History Month in the Commonwealth

"The proclamation issued by this Office designating April as Confederate History Month contained a major omission. The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed. The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights, and led to the Civil War. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation. In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly approved a formal statement of "profound regret" for the Commonwealth's history of slavery, which was the right thing to do.

McDonnell is a pussy. Governors of other states make the proclamation and no one gives a fig. McDonnell let it become an issue and caved to the diverse population of professional victims.

Would any African American want to be a member of the party of slavery?

IIRC the slave ships which visited the African coasts (they got their slaves by buying them from the victors of warring African tribes) went several places, not just to North America. They were much more likely to survive if headed for the American colonies/states, which accounted for something under a quarter of the slave business. None of this excuses the chattel slave business, but circumstances were propitious for those who came to America. When chattel slavery was abolished, few wanted to set sail back to Africa.

I apologize for people who never owned slaves who keep apologizing.

I apologize for people who never were slaves who keep behaving as if they still are.

I apologize for a media who will take this stupid story and run with it, making it a huge deal when this nation is sliding into slavery to government.

I do not apologize for the Democrat party--the party of slavery, segregation, and sustained sustenance by government.

I never got why GOP politicians continue to apologize when the left demands it. The left never does the same with conservatives. Who cares what a few whiney liberals think?

“Poor McDonnell, a politician just can’t win for losing.”

This is what is called “an unforced error”.

I’ve pondered buying property in Namibia for as part of my retirement planning. I could live there quite happily.

The Spanish and Portuguese brought many black slaves to the New World because they had a hard time enslaving the native Indians. It was very hard to force them underground to work in the mines and on the plantations. In some cases maybe the Indian population was too small.

It gets a reaction like “don’t confuse us with the facts” when this is shared with black communities. Republicans have lots of boring facts; Democrats have shouting and slogans. For every time Republicans fell down in showing blacks to freedom, they stood up another dozen times. Democrats have been, well, rats. Slip in, carry disease, eat up valuable resources. But hey they are cute and furry!

Who knew all those Virginians fighting in the Civil War done so to preserve Slavery? Conversely, all those fighting for the Union done so to free the Slaves.

Be that as it may or not, boycotting such Republicans is perilous unless a better replacement is handy.

Ask George Allen how much Virginians appreciate “apologies”.
McDonnell has just exposed himself as a weakling.

Some of my family is religious Jews. They worked for the Federal Gov't so can get that big ol retirement check sent anywhere.  So where did they retiree? Israel. The standard of living is roughly comparable. No black America will ever retire in Africa. Their slave ancestors suffered so they could shoot off their mouths today and get affirmative action and preferences up the wazoo. They get to guilt trip whitey even though most white Americans had no ancestors in America during the slave days. My people got here in 1906

George Allen waited weeks before apologizing, and only gave a half-fast apology.

At Least McDonnell nipped it in the bud. Better sooner than later.

Still, this was Amateur Hour in Richmond Virginia.
