Virginia Gov. Robert F. McDonnell (R) apologized late Wednesday for failing to include slavery in his proclamation declaring April as Confederate History Month. The full text of his statement follows:
Governor Bob McDonnell issued the following statement today regarding the proclamation of Confederate History Month in the Commonwealth
"The proclamation issued by this Office designating April as Confederate History Month contained a major omission. The failure to include any reference to slavery was a mistake, and for that I apologize to any fellow Virginian who has been offended or disappointed. The abomination of slavery divided our nation, deprived people of their God-given inalienable rights, and led to the Civil War. Slavery was an evil, vicious and inhumane practice which degraded human beings to property, and it has left a stain on the soul of this state and nation. In 2007, the Virginia General Assembly approved a formal statement of "profound regret" for the Commonwealth's history of slavery, which was the right thing to do.

The Governor has never had any slaves why apologize. Time for someone else “To get over it”
This is idiocy!
Justice Brothers, attention Justice Brothers: Please pick up the courtesy phone...
All the FReepers were saying how brilliant McDonnell was for bringing up this meaningless controversy.
Scratch McDonnell from my list of potential VPs in 2012. This was just too dumb a move.
Well you can be sure that the Post harped on them for this. Remember their Macaca crusade?
Nobody in America will deny that slavery is evil. What is important to remember is that it was around since the beginning of man. African slaves were not the only slaves. The Jews in Egypt come to mind. Africans were sold into slavery by other Africans.
America is the one nation that had a war with itself involving the issue.
They would have been better off in Africa...or on the streets.
America became their only chance and they're blowing it...
Walter Williams opposes slavery (obviously), but is grateful that it allowed him to be born in the United States, and not some warlord run African nation.
Apologies aren’t enough...Time to put out the big screen TV’s.../s
One could say the same thing about Socialism, wonder if we can get an apology for that also?
The REAL ABOMONATION is not slavery from 200 years ago. It’s the TAX SLAVERY of ourselves and the next two generations, so far, who have to be fleeced of their earnings to hand out to the “less fortunate”, and to purchase and/or subsidize the Government takeovers of private businesses.
During the American Civil War, Richmond served as the capital of the Confederate States of America, and many important American Civil War landmarks remain in the city today[when?], including the Virginia State Capitol and the White House of the Confederacy, among others.

It’s cruel but truthful to say but slavery is a great deal for todays Black Americans. Would any Black American want to live in Africa? Many Italian-Americans could handle living in Italy. No American blackman is ever going to retire in Africa but I know plenty of Polish and Greek Americans who retire in the “old country”
If their ancestors hadn’t be made slaves (just like they did in Africa back then) where would they be?
Please, Lord, send me a conservative politician who will refuse to apologize just because leftists bray or whine.
What about Black History Month? Shouldn’t Black History Month mention the huge amount of black crime? If we’re going to include the sins of Virginian whites, what about American blacks?
Today’s Southerners, when compared to their ancestors, are Pussies.
Poor McDonnell, a politician just can’t win for losing.
If the modern day Liberals hadn't destroyed their families and made them welfare slaves with their policies, where would they be?
Isn’t it time that Democrat Party apologize for being the party of slavery? The Black Codes? Jim Crow Laws? Segregation? And rightfully claim their terror wing the KKK and apologize for same.
May as well get it all out.
Maybe we should ban the Democrat Party?
