Town rallies around accused killer of molester

Usually, when someone who’s been a mainstay of a community gets shot and killed in his own home, there’s a public outcry to bring his killer to justice. But not in the idyllic Pacific Coast town of Fort Bragg, Calif., where the citizenry has risen up in support of the man who pulled the trigger.

Aaron Vargas has been in jail ever since Feb. 8, 2009, when police say he shot and killed Darrell McNeill, the man he alleges sexually abused him when he was just 11 years old. After the shooting, 12 other men came forward to say that McNeill, a former Boy Scout leader and popular member of the community, had also abused them. Some had reported the abuse but law enforcement officials took no action.

When the truth came out, the town rallied behind the 32-year-old Vargas. Citizens held demonstrations demanding that he be freed from jail. T-shirts supporting his cause are being sold, with the proceeds going to his legal defense. Cars sport bumper stickers supporting him. Even McNeill’s widow is defending Vargas.

Nope. I know nothing about this case. Given the community support for the killer, I suspect the perv was indeed guilty. They know a whole lot more about it than I do.

The 12 additional guys coming forth is pretty convincing.

I’m a big fan of dead child molesters and rapists.

I am just not a big fan of vigilantism, due to its obvious potential for killing the wrong people.

Frontal lobotomy AND physical castration. ... And I used to be the ‘cutter’ when removing pig testicles on the farm. The sound is indescribable ... poor creatures.

Ft. Bragg is one of the most left wing towns in CA, including SF. Luckily it is small and lightly populated and located in a remote area of the coast. It surprises me that so many of the people are on this guys side.

Thanks. I knew somebody would recall the case. We need more men like Gary Plauche.

"Since there's no trial, there's never any proof whether they got the right or the wrong guy."

Hmmmm. So, according to you, if someone is released from prison after DNA evidence conclusively shows that the person was innocent, there is still no "proof" of his innocence since there has been no trial in which the DNA evidence was submitted?

Also, if someone, God forbid, guns down your family in front of you, you will steadfastly maintain that there is no "proof" that the killer actually did it unless he is convicted in a court of law?

IMHO, you have a questionable concept of what "proof" is.

I still await your evidence that "all too often" vigilantes bring the wrong person to justice...
