Obama swings and misses at Sox lore

Blame Rahm Emanuel for team’s No. 1 fan dropping the ball during interview

What's happening to President Barack Obama, America's No. 1 White Sox fan, is just absolutely terrible.

OK, sure, the poor guy committed a grievous baseball sin. But now he's taking a beating, the kind Cubs ace Carlos Zambrano would give his own catcher, or maybe his manager.

It almost reminds me of the time CBS' Katie Couric sweetly asked Sarah Palin what she liked to read. Palin drew a blank and reporters never let her live it down.

But I say, let's leave the poor president alone. After all, he's a White Sox fan, isn't he?

Obama's troubles started Monday after he threw out the ceremonial first pitch at the Washington Nationals home opener.

He threw lefty and missed the plate, which wasn't surprising. What was surprising is what happened after he joined announcer Rob Dibble in the booth for some happy talk.

Dibble commented on Obama's hat — a nicely faded black Sox cap — which the president proudly wore on the mound reminding all of us once again of the heroic team from Chicago that has actually won a World Series in the past 100 years.

Dibble asked the fateful question, one so easy that Hawk Harrelson would have called it a "can of corn."

Dibble: "Who was one of your favorite White Sox players growing up?"

Obama: "You know … uh … I thought that … you know … the truth is, that a lot of the Cubs I liked too."

Ouch. The silence between the stammers was excruciating. America's No. 1 Sox fan couldn't name one Sox player.

Not former players like Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk or future Hall of Famer Frank Thomas or manager Ozzie Guillen. The least he could have...

I agree that his lying is pathological (not unlike Clinton - either one of them - or Gore). He lies when there is no need for it.

A lot of people couldn't name anybody on the White Sox in 1960 whatever, and wouldn't have faulted him for not being able to.

Instead of saying he was in Hawaii and was an Oakland fan (was he?), he should have just fessed up..........but he couldn't.

It's a sickness, a moral sickness.

I see the connection now. Obama’s sometimes equated to Jesus. Eephus rhymes with Jesus. So therefore, it was a pun... Ha ha ha! So funny! Not.

Kind of like that great Red Sox fan,John Kerry saying, when running for president, that his favorite Sox player was Manny Ortiz.

Guess Kerry thinks all Hispanics look alike.

Caused quite a stir in Red Sox Nation.

Obama lies at will for practice, like any experienced con artist. Only bits of truth as mere decoration, not important in any other way.

What?? Manny Ortiz didn't play for the Red Sox? Who knew??;*)

Actually it's exactly the same. There's some need to not be the doofuses they are and pretend they know baseball, when they don't.

And they don't seem to have any shame over lying.

btw, does everyone else here agree that a good basketball player (ie. an athlete) like Obama is supposed to be, would be able to throw a baseball, even if he had never thrown one in his life?

My husband and I both think that there's no good basketball player who throws like a girly man like Obama does. Are we right?

Is Cominskey Park anywhere near Kerry's Lambert Field?

Glad you liked it...that was actually the track of the ball, too...pretty disgraceful. A lib at work was jabbing at me because I made fun of his throw, and he asked if I thought I would do better.

I told him damned right I would. I wouldn’t go up there without practicing to give a presentable show. I know Bush did.

It's laughable.....Dibble has been on the radio for years, locally and nationally. He may have been trolling for a compliment for his brief stint with the White Sox......but while Obama's non-answer was an exposé of his deficit of baseball knowledge in Chicago, the pregnant question is.....Why was 'Nasty" being nice?

Like, not only could I list players of the Cincinnati Reds of many moons ago,Rose,Bench,Morgan,Perez,Cardenas, etc. I can list the manager, Sparky Anderson, the radio and TV station,TV announcer (Joe Nuxhall), the advertising sponsors, etc.
AND he got the name of ther stadium wrong. He called it the Cominski Park, and even I , from Ohio, know that it is Comiskey Park.

LOL...I had no idea what you meant. I had to look up “Eephus”...the last time I was a real, honest to goodness baseball fan was when Lou Brock was setting records stealing bases for the St. Louis Cardinals...so I never really watched much baseball.

But living up here in the Boston area during the Seventies, I damn well should have known, if it was something Bill Lee was doing! I guess I would have to have been blind or deaf not to.

If Bush had effed-up this royally, the libs would’ve discovered baseball as a sport.

I was a fan of the Reds and could probably name 20 of the players from the 70’s. Heck I could name a bunch of Oakland A’s players from that era. And I lived about as far away from Oakland as you can get. BTW, I miss Kahn’s hotdogs and Big Red Smokies.

W was in the Reds clubhouse before a game and he knew just about all of the players. He had a converstaion with Ken Griffey Jr. about his dad.
