We need to start opposition research on any possible replacement NOW.

Good riddance you worthless old liberal coot...

Shame he'll be replaced by a young liberal, though.

This will place the confirmation process front and center for the election.

If the Republicans had a lick of sense, they would filibuster the next Obama appointee and leave the seat unfilled until 2012, just like democrats did President Bush's lower federal court nominees during his last two years in office.

Unfortunately, they have Snow, Collins, McCain, and Grahmnesty drooling all over themselves to approve any marxist that Obama sends their way.

Only 4 months to stonewall on his replacement, until Senate elections - in a normal govt procedure to turnover USSC

But I doubt the reds (the real reds, who posture in blue states) will honor process anymore than they have done to date

the manipulation swan-song Reid and obama will use to speedily install a replacement, will be another Constitutional debacle

This is great news. Obama will put in a communist judge and cause a big fight right before the elections. The one thing we don't want Obama to do is pivot. Keep him fighting on the left up until November and keep the voters mad as heck.

Stevens...Barney Frank...Stupak...as the ship sinks.

God help us - as bad as Stevens is- we can be assured the next one will be a real radical.

The nuttier the replacement Obama nominates, the worse the confirmation hearings will be for the Democrats right before the congressional elections.

The timing is great for the Republicans. He either has to go with a milquetoast run-of-the-mill statist for an easy confirmation or he goes for a full monty marxist and kills his party in the elections.

Huffington Post already lists Cass Sunstein as a "strong contender" - that one would be fun!

Hey crackhead, why don't you nominate your buddy Cornel West, so we can really have it out!

John Paul Stevens was placed on the SCOTUS by Gerald Ford. I remember Ford saying that he had read Steven’s briefs written while Stevens sat on a Federal Appealate Court and Ford emphasized that he concurred with Stevens’ written opinions. It was readily apparent that Steven’s was a leftist/liberal, and this misguided high court selection gave candidate Ronald Reagan more political traction against the bumbling Ford.

I don’t think anyone is surprised that Stevens would retire during the Obama administration. I always believed that Steven’s was more than a bit disingenous when he claimed that he was a “Conservative” on the Court. Moreover, I think that Stevens wanted to time this while Obama has a strong majority in the Senate, so Obama can get another “wise latina” type choice through this radical body. Perhaps Stevens’ believes that Obama would have to select a more “moderate” liberal if the GOP picked up another 8 or 9 seats in the next Senate elections.

When people finally get deadly serious about removing the marxist tyrants, options will become available to remove even the marxist SC justices from their positions of power over the people of this nation. This will be done through either the need to fill a newly “vacated” seat or through the irrelevancy of the position in the context of certain states and the people of those states.

Justice Stevens was Jerry Ford’s worst mistake; a truly stupid appointment made over the objections of conservatives by a go-along, get-along politician who had been in DC far too long.

OH yes, just before the Nov elections we will get to point out the C/F/S drive by the Dummies.

Thanks Stevens. Free campaign material!

If you wanted to know if the Donks were going to lose the Senate in November, this indicates that the smart money thinks they will. Otherwise, why pick this fight before the election?

The Court will just have a headache replaced by an upset stomach.

The way I look at it, the more loony radical left the replacement, the more it will nudge Justice Kennedy to the right.

IMO, that's the best scenario we can hope for.
