Spanking toddlersmakes for more aggressive kindergartners, according to a new study from Tulane University in New Orleans.
Research finds spanking has long-term negative effects on children's behavior. While organizations like the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Center for Effective Discipline staunchly advocate against corporal punishment, many parents continue to turn to the rod when disciplining their children.
In a 2005 online poll, 72 percent of adults reported that it was "OK to spank a child." Various studies in recent years found the prevalence of corporal punishment varied widely, from 35 percent of parents to 90 percent, authors of the Tulane study note.
In the new study, published Monday in the journal Pediatrics, researchers found that of 2,500 mothers surveyed across the country, 46 percent reported no spanking in the last month, 28 percent said they spanked one to two times, and 26 percent reported spanking more than twice.
Three-year-old children of mothers who used spanking more frequently were significantly more likely to have aggressive kids later on down the road, the Tulane researchers found.

Well then it’s a good thing 3 of mine chose the military for their careers - they can work off all that aggression from years of getting their butts busted hunting the enemy. Look out Taliban! LOL
Absolute BS because they don’t distinguish between occasional moderate spanking and out and out beating. We spanked out daughter probably less than 10 times before she turned 8 (never needed to after that). Today at 15 she’s one of the wisest, kindest kids I’ve ever met. And if she’s a little “agressive,” then great!
Ya, Mothers who don’t spank are dragging around the spoiled, misbehaived brats, that everyone else is motivated to spank....
50 years ago, most kids got spanked. Do you think they were more aggressive then than now? Not to mention, passivity can be overrated. Would you rather have the passive couch potato or the person aggressive enough to go get a job and pay their own bills?
You forgot the MEGA BARF ALERT on this post. These pseudo scientific study’s have ALWAYS left out items affecting this kind of behavior. Why is it I can show you far more well adjusted kids who were spanked yet somehow they are NEVER COUNTED among the control group?
Its the same when I talked to a liberal who worked with “at risk” kids who are abused. to her it was an epidemic...of course it is, those are the ONLY kids you see. If they are coming to you they are in deep troubles yet she conveniently forgot about the MILLIONS and MILLIONS of kids she does NOT see.
And mother’s who don’t spank have screaming, wild, little monsters who can wrap their parents around their little fingers while annoying everyone else!
Ah! You noticed it was staged? Dang it!
aggressive?? works for me. then they won’t be bullied.
solved & have a nice day.
Well, I assume that mothers are more likely to do discipline of toddlers. I know when my one year old gets to spanking age, I’ll do most of the spanking at first because I’m home with her. When she’s older we can wait for Daddy to get home but when she’s little she’ll need spanking on-the-spot.
agreed... pure bunk
Spanking #1 - Ran off with neighborhood kids for several hours without telling the folks where I was
Spanking #2 - Did something that almost got me seriously injured
Spanking #3 - Talked back to my mother (dear God, I can still remember the sting off that one)
Spanking #4 - Did something that almost got someone else seriously injured
Spanking #5 - Stole from a neighbor
Are they sure its not aggressive toddlers are more likely to be spanked?
Spanking is evil, but partial-birth abortion is a “right” to be defended at all costs. Makes sense to me.
Our kids say that Mom spanked harder than Dad.
Study: Spanked Children May Grow Up to Be Happier, More Successful
There's a dozen studies saying it's good, and a dozen saying it's bad. My conclusion? STOP FUNDING THESE ASININE STUDIES!
what utter bullshite
I spank(ed) my 5 kids...some rarely need it...some need it a lot.
It stops bad behavior when it’s happening but it’s no cure.
Nothing is.
We are born over half as we are...maybe 70-80%....that is a lotta crap that is hard to control but you try to mold it best you can.
Just look at certain groups in our culture to see how out of control they are and they had zero discipline and no daddies and few moms.
The proof is in the pudding.
Discipline works.
This argument is about as nonsensical as homosexual “marriage” or “butt love”
Yeah, I’ve probably only spanked my daughter 10 times or so; she’s five. The reasons are these:
- She lies.
- She talks back.
- She disobeys.
These all break one of the Ten Commandments. I spank once and then ask her why I spanked her. She cannot leave until she does. And she remembers.
Yep, the bs is flying with this one.
You should have showed Nobama pitching a baseball! lol
