Rand Paul Builds Double-Digit Lead in Race for Kentucky GOP Senate Nod

Rand Paul, son of Texas Rep. Ron Paul and a favorite of the Tea Party movement, has built a big lead over Secretary of State Trey Grayson in the race for the GOP Senate nomination in Kentucky, according to a SurveyUSA poll conducted April 9-11.

The race has been depicted as a test of the movement's influence, pitting a candidate trying to capitalize on the voter anger it reflects against an establishment Republican who has won re-election to his position three times. Grayson has fought back with TV ads honing in on Paul's "strange ideas," such as saying "Paul even wonders whether 9/11 was our fault."

Paul is ahead of Grayson by 45 percent to 30 percent with 6 percent for three other candidates and 19 percent undecided.

Conservatives favor Paul by 51 percent to 29 percent with 16 percent undecided. Those who attend religious services regularly or occasionally favor Paul by double-digit margins. Gun owners back Paul 48 percent to 22 percent with 22 percent undecided. There is an income gap between Paul and Grayson supporters: Paul leads among Kentuckians earning less than $50,000 a year by 49 percent to 22 percent with 21 percent undecided, but his margin is much smaller (42 percent to 38 percent) among those earning over $50,000.

Paul is going to pull this out. It will be good to have a Republican we can trust. I know there have been a lot of outright lies concerning the purposeful confusing of Rand Paul's positions and his fathers and those of fringe Libertarians. I know one thing and that is he stood up for Jim Bunning and I don't remember either of the other candidates doing so. He isn't a soft conservative afraid to speak his mind and be proud of his conservative libertarianism. Paul will win people to our cause as Senator. We need more like him.

Whose seat is this for? I like Libertarian fiscal conservatism, but do not like their social "anything goes, let's just stay out of it" attitude.

This whole country is turning libertarian (minus the silly drug stuff). Ron Paul has dominated every straw poll. He “lost” the New Orleans vote by one rigged vote and won hands down at CPAC.
His son is now dominating this race.

When you have other Republican candidates claiming that the 'Constitution is just a piece of paper' Dr. Paul is a breath of fresh air.

You know what? With Hitler and his Obamanazi minions poised to dismantle our country, I’ll take a Libertarian fiscal conservative and deal with the social “anything goes, let’s just stay out of it” attitude later...

Yeah, hanging out with traitors like Adam Kokesh is a “breath of fresh air.” And he and Junior Paul DO share the same agenda.

Is Rand Paul a social libertarian, meaning, is he socially liberal?

Paul rigged both every bit as much as Romney did.

Straw polls are meaningless.

If that is true, the Democrats will be the majority for generations. Most Americans simply want nothing to do with the likes of Ron Paul. If Paul and his “libertarian” types become too dominant in the Republican party, the right will become fractured in this country and the leftist forces will dominate.

I don’t know enough about Rand to come to any conclusions yet, but his father is a nut and his supporters remind me of Larouchies.

Broken link.

I do have to admit, Rand Paul's ties with Adam Kokesh and the nutso "anti-war" crowd are troubling. Makes me wish we had a real conservative in this race, instead of a fruit loop and an establishment insider.

won hands down at CPAC.

You mean the CPAC straw poll that his followers rigged?
