British civil aviation authorities ordered the closure of the countrys airspace as of noon on Thursday to shield aircraft from a high-altitude cloud of ash drifting south and east from an erupting volcano in Iceland. The plume shut down airports and forced the cancellation of hundreds of flights in a wide arc from Ireland to Scandinavia.
The closures left airplanes on the tarmac as the rolling cloud made up of minute particles of silicate that can damage airplane engines headed from Britain and Scandinavia toward northern Europe. News reports said Denmark and Sweden also had restricted air travel.
From midday today until at least 6 p.m., there will be no flights permitted in U.K. controlled airspace other than emergency situations, Britains National Air Traffic Service said in a statementon its Web site. This has been applied in accordance with international civil aviation policy.
The move effectively grounded all flights in Britain from 11:00 a.m. Greenwich Mean Time (7:00 a.m. Eastern) and affected an estimated 6,000 flights that use British airspace every day, aviation experts said. Oddly, for travelers, the closure was announced under clear blue skies. Experts had said earlier that the ash may not be visible from the ground but can clog airplane engines.
The impact was likely to be among the most severe in many years, cutting transatlantic links and severing air routes across northern Europe.

âRemember Icesave.â Iceland attacks...
Amazing photography! Thanks for posting.
No. That’s the Cheney Chasm
If the eruption goes for a while, the ash may cause the temperatures to drop due to reflectivity in the upper atmosphere. Algore will be heartbroken.

and this ongoing eruption is only the first shoe to drop- wait until Katla awakens (not if, but when)
No, Bjork’s fault.
Then maybe I’m confused about the location of the Rove Rift?
Have they figured out how much they need in carbon-offsets for this?
Seriously, I hope all are out of harm’s way. This could be Pinatubo-like in its’ consuqences.
The pure folly and greed behind the carbon offset idea and those who seek to capitalize on it should be silenced every time a natural occurrence such as this makes you realize just how little we humans can impact Nature.
Well as long as he wears a belt, you don’t see it...???
More importantly, the lower temps may adversely affect the European growing season and hurt crop yields, driving food prices up globally.
Oh no, Iceland needs to pay a really really high fine for what they are doing to the atmosphere. I think they are putting more carbon into the air per person than the average US citizen. We are all doomed if they won't pay the tax.
Let the fun begin.
so when is the UN meeting to pass a resolution demanding that Iceland reduce its CO2 emissions?
