Everyone knows that George Washington couldn't tell a lie. What you probably didn't know is that he couldn't return a library book on time. From the article: "New York City's oldest library says one of its ledgers shows that the president has racked up 220 years' worth of late fees on two books he borrowed, but never returned. One of the books was the 'Law of Nations,' which deals with international relations. The other was a volume of debates from Britain's House of Commons. Both books were due on Nov. 2, 1789."
The Far Left Looney Toons finally got something on George. He did not return 2 Libray books. He was probably busy at Valley Forge.
I don’t look for him to be in to pay the fine any time soon.
In the island of my birth, I’m sure an ambulance chaser will emerge from the woodworks and will be willing to sue President Washington’s heirs on behalf of the library on a contingency basis...
Something tells me that he ain’t pay these and he probably don’t really care either...
Now I ask you, what other evidence is necessary to prove that the Founding Fathers were reading Vattel?
He was 8 months into his first term as the first POTUS.
MSM: Obama/Washington share commonalities.
Oh wait, Obama had unpaid, overdue parking tickets.
Never mind.
How about one of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, saying so?
Charles W.F. Dumas, an ardent supporter of the American cause, printed an edition of {The Law of Nations} in 1774, with his own notes illustrating how the book applied to the American situation.
In 1770, Dumas had met Franklin in Holland, and was one of Franklin's key collaborators in his European diplomacy. He sent three copies to Franklin, instructing him to send one to Harvard University, and to put one in the Philadelphia library.
Franklin sent Dumas a letter, Dec. 9, 1775, thanking him for the gift. Franklin stated, ``I am much obliged by the kind present you have made us of your edition of Vattel. It came to us in good season, when the circumstances of a rising state make it necessary frequently to consult the law of nations.
Accordingly, that copy which I kept, has been continually in the hands of the members of our congress, now sitting ...|.''
Well, yeah, that works too. But this little tidbit made me smile.
Actually, the headline should read, “liberal librarians drop the ball on collecting fines for the benefit of the library victims who could not read the books Washington forgot to return before he died...their claims have been barred by the Statute of Limitations, but they argue that statute is a living and breathing statute that should not apply to them because of the seriousness of the charge and the fact that they really care about the victims of George Washington”
library fines cannot exceed the original cost of the book
