Lowden Doubles Down On Health-Care-By-Barter: 'Bring A Chicken To The Doctor' (VIDEO)
TPM ^

Sue Lowden, the front-running Republican challenger to Sen. Harry Reid, yesterday doubled down on her idea that health care could be paid for using the barter system.

Last week, when Lowden suggested "that bartering is really good," it seemed that she may have been talking about haggling prices and just had her vocab mixed up. It happens to everyone.

But yesterday, on a local news program, Lowden seemed to double down on the idea. Asked whether the statement made her seem disconnected, she shot back that it's Reid who's disconnected for not knowing "that this is already happening in our state."

"Let's change the system and talk about what the possibilities are. I'm telling you that this works. You know, before we all started having health care, in the olden days, our grandparents, they would bring a chicken to the doctor. They would say I'll paint your house," she said. "[That's] what people would do to get health care with their doctors. Doctors are very sympathetic people."

"I'm not backing down from that system," she added.

What do people think? Will this help or hurt Lowden in her campagin against Reid?

How many people in Nevada have chickens? Seems ill-conceived . . Still she is a charming lady.

Hurt. A lot. But it’s good she’s taking herself out of the running before it’s too late for Nevada Republicans to choose a competent candidate to run against Reid. This is the kind of thing that turns a frontrunner into a former frontrunner.

Unfortunately, this has been tried and failed.

The IRS will demand tax payment (in US dollars) for the value of each bartered item.

If Republicans want to not blow their chance at defeating Reid, they’d better get serious real quick and figure out that you don’t bring a knife to a gunfight, and you don’t bring a chicken to the doctor.

My wife is from a European country with socialized medicine.
Here’s how it works: Cash.

You can wait around all day and get free care. Or you can pay
cash. It’s expected you’ll pay cash.

Lot of the medical care is done by pharmacist. Medical degrees
are four year. Lot shorter life expectancy.

Get what you pay for.

I’ve often thought about the America that was before the Socialist Teddy Kennedy screwed it all up with his cohorts in the Socialist/Democrat Party back in the sixties.

I’d love to see a return to the old days with government the Hell out of our lives, our healthcare, protecting our freedoms instead of taking them from us.

I would think Lowden is reflecting on that America that was, and should be again as the laws that have come about at the hand of the Leftists, and their political sycophants are mostly contrary to the supreme law that is the Constitution IMO.

There are lots of chickens in Nevada. Cock fighting is a very big deal and there are several large egg operations. More coming in since Kalifornia is running them out of the chicken business. Heck most of my neighbors have 3-10 chickens.

Are you saying that doctors in Europe don’t like chickens or that they don’t eat chicken for dinner?

“you don’t bring a chicken to the doctor.”

If you’re really sick, bring a cow!

In a rambling way, she might be trying to say that onerous regulation would drive a significant amount of health care under the table. Nobody would try to pay a doctor with a chicken today. But this bumbling makes George W. Bush look like he had the lithe tongue of an auctioneer.

I really do like Sue Lowden. She is absolutely adorable and likable. I don’t know if this kills her chances . . Harry Reid has already made an attack ad for it .. mentioned on Leno, etc.

Nevada voters are a funny lot. They may vote for her anyway, or choose a more buttoned-down less charismatic candidate for the Republican nomination.

This is an unforced error . . the kind that wipes out $100,000s of hard-fought donations. She reminds me of Sarah Palin in a way . .

“HIPPA laws prevent bartering according to my Doctor.”

Screw legal, barter works fine as long as neither side is stupid enough to report it.

Does Hippa prevent “gift-giving”? I can think of some nice presents for my doctor, like helping him start a new hobby for when he retires.

Like a nice precious coin collection!
