Two separate polls released Tuesday show a tight race in the May 18 special election for the late Rep. John P. Murtha's (D-Pa.) seat.
A Public Policy Polling survey released Tuesday showed businessman Tim Burns with a 3-point lead over Murtha aide Mark Critz,, 44 percent to 41 percent.
And in a polling memo paid for by the conservative American Action Network and conducted by GOP pollster McLaughlin and Associates, Critz and Burns are in a statistical tie, 40 percent to 39 percent.
The PPP survey took the opinion of 1,197 likely voters in the district April 17-18 and had a margin of error of 2.8 points. The April 15 McLaughlin and Associates poll included 300 likely voters and had a margin of error of 5.6 points.
CQ Politics currently rates this special election contest as a Tossup.

This is amazing. A Republican win here would be as much a rebuke of Nancy Pelosi as Barack Obama.
PPP is a dem polling outfit. They’re not outrageously inaccurate, but they do tend to favor Dems by at least modest margins, FWIW. Burns is probably doing even better than the poll indicates.
Critz is campaigning as a conservative. Not kidding. He comes on his ad saying that he’s pro-life and pro-gun and not liberal. Showing Burns’ ad calling him that. The suckers will fall for it.
WTH??? Where’s Bill Russell? Have I missed that much?
Critz is a moron, Russell is the man.
Oh I forgot he pasted. This day just gets better and better.
Whatever happened to Russell or Irey. They seemed like good candidates.
Irey didn’t run this time and Russell lost the nomination to Burns.
Hiya, Justa!
Burns was selected by the conferees and Gleason to run in the special election against the Dem to fill Murtha’s seat.
Bill Russell is running against Burns for the Republican nomination in the primary for the general in November, the special and primary is on the same day.
Typical Gleason, he never supported Russell or Irey against Murtha, why the Repubs don’t show him the door is beyond me.
Thanks. Russell really seemed pretty awesome. I wish him Godspeed.
Bill Russell is on the ballot in the Republican Primary election, the winner is on the November General Election ballot to pick the new Congressman for a full two year term.
Both the Special Election and the Primary Election are being held on the same day, May 18th.
Darlin', y'all got some catchin' up to do!!! ;-)
This special election that this poll is about is to elect someone to serve the remaining 7 months of Murtha's term. The special election is also on May 18th.
The internals of both of these polls are goofy.
Republicans have been oversampled and Democrats have been undersampled. In the McLauglin Poll, a third of the voters sampled are independents. Only 10% of voters in the 12th CD are indies.
I want Burns to win, but these polls don’t tell us anything.

Also, the Libertarian candidate on the ballot is not mentioned in the poll questions of either poll.
Thanks...Sounds like neither tell us much. It seems to me the Libertarian could make a dent in the Repub vote.
Burns was selected by the conferees and Gleason... GLEASON!
Grrrrrrr
Typical Gleason, he never supported Russell or Irey against Murtha, why the Repubs dont show him the door is beyond me.
Tell me about it! I remember calling the PA State GOP complaining about making him chairman back in 2006 after fawning all over al-Murthawi. How long does he get to hold that position?
He's a demonrat ... of course he's a moron!
