More than half of the Arizona businesses that had their workforces audited by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents since last July have been found to have illegal workers on their payrolls.
Immigration department spokeswoman Virginia Kice says that 43 of the 84 companies screened in two rounds of audits have been sent letters listing employees whose employment eligibility is suspect. The agency's policy is not to name the companies with illegal employees unless they are disciplined with a fine or other measure.
Besides violation notices, two of the 43 companies with illegal workers were informed of pending fines. ICE agents did 40 of the audits last July and the other 44 in November.

Carlyle companies must forfeit funds after employing illegal immigrants
[snip]During the investigation seven Wedekempers Construction Inc. employees were apprehended. Six of them were later charged with various criminal offenses, including misuse of a Social Security number, possession of a fraudulent Alien Registration Receipt Card and re-entry of a removed alien.

everify, a free of charge voluntary system, is available, or so I believe, as I do not hire anybody personally. Making everify mandatory has been a proposal in the past, but knocked out of legislation by the usual suspects. Compliance costs are minimal.

I've been told by an HR person that the quickest and easiest way to spot 90% of illegals is the federal eVerify program. According to her, it's an online program that simply confirms that a valid social security number is held by the person named on the job app.
Being a one-time deal and given all of the other tax and reporting requirements being what they are, this seems to be a minimal extra effort required of even the smallest business.
I suspect it's not a matter of verification difficulty. I'd guess it's a matter of being cheaper for the business to pay illegals $1 an hour than a citizen minimum wage.
Good, more jobs for Americans.....
Jobs ‘real Americans’ won’t do, no doubt.../s
They show you valid ID, social security card, produce a social security number tied to themselves...what is an employer to do after that?
What happens when the social security number matches in eVerify?
The problem with e-verify, as I understand it, is that the Social Security administration won't vouch for its accuracy.
As a consequence, an employer using e-verify and not hiring a given person becomes subject to liability charges brought thru the EEOC.
Proving once again that the federal government cannot be counted upon to do anything right. Except, possibly, collect taxes.
what if the same number matches 1000 times from across the country ?
Seems like e Verify is a good tool, but some illegals can slip through. That makes the 43% of Arizona businesses having an illegal seem logical, and demonizes fewer employers.
Still, it's the Federal government that allowed the situation to grow into the disaster that it is,.
I understand that the IRS will not tell a taxpayer where or who is using their stolen Social Security number, only that it is being used for income and the amount of that income.
This is what I expected, and I would proffer that La Raza and the ACLU will run ringers for a nice easy shakedown program.
If they could control the job situation to where there was no profit for these guys to come here, ie no job for them, the illegal situation would be solved, imho.
Wonder if the new anti-immigration bill Jan Brewer signed yesterday will help?
I’m sure.
