According to a new documentary, disgraced New York Governor Eliot Spitzer wasn't brought down by his penchant for high-priced call girls. He wasn't brought down by committing questionable, if not illegal, bank transactions to pay for the call girls. He wasn't brought down by his misuse of the New York State Police for political purposes.
No, in the world of "Untitled Eliot Spitzer Film" director Alex Gibney, "Spitzer's takedown of financial industry bigwigs... paved the way for his downfall."
According to the New York Post:
Gibney made no apology for his pro-Spitzer take and the audience, which included Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly, generally agreed."The film made me like him better, the fact he was interviewed showed he was open and compassionate," said viewer Maria Saluta, 52. "Without a doubt I'd vote for him again."
Spitzer is, according to one source, counting on the film to help repair his tarnished image, possibly in preparation for another run at political office:
Spitzer, a source said, has begun to reactivate his political network, meeting with donors and others to make the case for his recovery. It's unknown what office the disgraced Democrat would seek. But given the weight of the center-left media behind him and the dysfunctional nature of New York State politics, the return of the "Love Guv," even if unwelcome, could be forthcoming. He still has a long political road ahead. His sterling image as a crusader has been tainted by his fall, and 58 percent of New Yorkers, according to a recent Marist poll, dont want him to run for office.
But Spitzers allies point out that that number had decreased from 69 percent last September, and the former governors preternatural confidence appears undiminished.
Indeed, the sheer speed of Spitzers re-emergence is a product of both the times and the man.
Spitzer is a heavy-handed thug who got “thugged”
LOL!!
Did his wife stay with him AND HIS MONEY???
No, actually it didn't cause his downfall, although in a country where there was actual justice for all, and not a different standard for Democrats and their buddies, it would have been his downfall, since he basically every slimy tactic in the book and a few that aren't to prosecute some arguably not guilty firms.
Wives think little of themselves...Can you say MONEY!!!
“he basically every slimy tactic in the book and a few that aren’t to prosecute some arguably not guilty firms. “
A la Jesse Hijack..
I read a good book by a broker who exposed his “tactics”
That is what I meant by a thug who got thugged.
John Foster Kane, meet Jake Geddes LOL!
I guess, compared to Tiger and Jesse James, this guy was more clever and discreet.
But, you know, not a very high bar.
The Clinton Legacy lives on in Eliot Spitzer’s shorts.
do they have to crawl over their dying mother to rape their developmentally disabled sister??
what???
Being Joe Lieberman.
How's that working for you, Silda Spitzer? Who's going to respect you if you don't respect yourself?
Never forget that 50% of voters have IQ's below 100.
ANALYSIS Spitzer is an individual totally absorbed with his own crass ambitions. The political Spitzer rode roughshod over anyone who dared stand in his path---friend or foe. At the end, when his reckless behavior was exposed, he had trampled on so many, none of the PTB were willing to defend him. He was tossed out of office on his sorry rear.
SPITZER'S ILLEGAL CAMPAIGN TACTICS For his two state campaigns, Spitzer spent a total of about $12M, mostly personal funds and bank loans. Spitzer borrowed about $5M from his father to help settle loans, and was earning $200,000 a year consulting for his father.
During Spitler's 1998 AG campaign, he indignantly denied allegations by his GOP opponent, Dennis Vacco (Vacco is a top-notch pro-life conservative), that Spitler's wealthy father had provided millions in loans to his campaign. Candidate Spitzer insisted he was using only his own money (family members are limited by law to $110,000 in total contributions). Spitler accused Vacco of "smearing" his father.
Not until he'd actually taken office did Spitzer admit that Dennis Vacco had been correct. In fact, it turned out Spitzer, despite earlier denials, had done the exact same thing during his unsuccessful 1994 run for AG.
GOV SPITZER ABUSED HIS OFFICE AS WELL AS HIS WIFE The beginning of Gov Spitzers end can be traced to three banking transfers that left his personal account at the North Fork Bank in New York spring and summer 2007.
These payments totaling $15,000 attracted the attention of bank employees who monitor accounts for signs of suspicious activity. (NOTE: After 911, money-laundering laws were significantly tightened, requiring banks to file so-called suspicious activity reports whenever there is evidence that clients might be trying to sidestep routine regulations).
THE SPITZER MONEY LAUNDRY Spitzers money transfers to a company called QAT International Inc later revealed to be a front for pimp Brener's Emperors Club brothel were reportedly considered by the bank to be an attempt to avoid another law that requires all transactions over $10,000 to be reported to the US Treasury.
Breaking down payments with intent to avoid US Treasury reporting requirements is an offense known as structuring.
The Spitzer case opened when banks noticed frequent transfers from Spitzer's several accounts and filed suspicious activity reports with the IRS (mandated post-911 precautions to hinder financing terrorism). The accounts were traced back to Spitzer, prompting public corruption investigators to open an inquiry.

BACKSTORY Spitzer falsely claimed during his 1988 AG campaign that he secured a $5 million campaign loan by mortgaging eight apartments his billionaire developer-father had given him. As the end of his campaign neared, Spitzer admitted that his father was actually paying off the loans and, therefore, financing his campaign - a possible election-law violation.
Harvard-educated Spitzer was quoted as saying in a magazine article "I didn't realize how necessary it was to be transparent about every personal financial transaction."
Between 2000-2004, the "father's charity" gave $101,000 to NARAL's foundation. NARAL also gave $10,500 to Spitzer's two campaigns.....NARAL endorsed him publicly.
The Bernard and Anne Spitzer Charitable Trust - on which Eliot, his brother Daniel, and their parents are board members - gave a total of $66,000 in 2004 to NARAL Pro-Choice New York, the radical abortion rights group; the Drum Major Institute, a think tank; and the Progressive America Fund, a voter mobilization effort. These groups, whose leaders backed Spitzer for governor, received $75,000 from the Spitzer "charity" between 2000-03.
Donations to Spitzer's political allies were apparently a fraction of $2.6 million (?) the Spitzer Foundation supposedly awarded in 2004.

The elder Spitzer, 82, and his immediate family have pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into Eliot's campaigns since his first losing bid for attorney general in 1994. The Spitzer family's "tax-exempt charity" has donated at least $140,000 to groups led by his political allies - a practice that some have questioned.
Bernard Spitzer also lent his son $5 million to pay for early campaigns when Eliot was largely unknown.
Through Spitzer has little trouble raising money now, his relatives have continued to do their part. He reported $19 million in his campaign coffers in January, with his parents and brother Daniel, a neurosurgeon, donating $326,000, records show.

For the first time, Eliot Spitzer acknowledged he's weighing another run for office -- as he expressed deep remorse for failing in the "fundamental duty" to be faithful to his wife, Silda.
In an interview with Fortune magazine editor-at-large Peter Elkind, the former governor is candid about his love of politics and his "agony" at being out of the game after resigning office in March 2008 following reports that he'd been snared in a high-priced call-girl scandal.
His comments to Elkind confirm a Post report from August 2009 that he has started talking to people about a political comeback -- possibly for state comptroller or against fellow Democrat Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand. Sources recently told The Post that in recent months, he asked his wife what she thought about him possibly running this year, and her reply was that it was too soon for him to do that, given the impact it would have on their healing family.
Of his conduct regarding his marriage, Spitzer told Elkind, "I made an egregiously horrendous judgment at every level. "Not just in terms of the risk-reward calculus, which seems like a very antiseptic way of thinking about it, but also in terms of what it meant to my family . . . What more fundamental duty is there than to a spouse?"
And even as Spitzer continues to say he isn't running again, Elkind said, "he declined to shut the door." "I love politics," Spitzer told Elkind, author of "Rough Justice: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer." "The substance, the debate about the issues. As for a race in 2010? It is just hard to see," he said. But he added, "I've never said I would never consider running for office again." Elkind's book is out April 20, and a screening of a documentary filmed in tandem will take place at the Tribeca Film Festival on April 24.

Vacco lost because idiot RINO Pataki persuaded him to reject the “Right to Life” line on the ballot which, at the time, was capable of delivering several thousand additional votes in upstate and Long Island.
Pataki did more to destroy the NYS GOP than anyone else combined.
Another reason to dump Pataki who is beginning to surface as a 2012 candidate.....even has TV ads to resurrect himself.
But I dont think Vacco attributed his loss to dumb Patakis anti-life advice.
Vacco maintained Spitzers dirty dealings did the trick.

I'm sure Spitzer's actions took a toll. However, when you look at the vote margins from 1998, you can see that the margin was approximately the same as the likely loss of votes from eschewing the Right to Life line. If Vacco had kept it, he'd probably have held Spitzer off.
