TALLAHASSEE -- Florida fugitive Paula Eileen Carroll got an unpleasant birthday surprise this morning when she was arrested by Brevard County Sheriffs Officers at her home for escaping from the Florida prison system more than three decades ago.
Carroll escaped 34 years ago from a Florida prison where she was serving a five year sentence for buying, receiving or concealing stolen property. She was sentenced on July 18, 1975 for the Osceola county offense, and escaped less than two months later, on September 3, 1975.
A tipster had contacted Fugitive Coordinator Rita Hall with the Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit and the Brevard County Sheriffs Office (BCSO) Fugitive Unit, and they worked together to engineer Carrolls recapture. Sgt. Frank T. Hickman and other members of the BCSO Fugitive Unit apprehended Carroll at 8:55 this morning as she walked from her residence to her vehicle.
She told the arresting officers of the BCSO Fugitive Unit that she had been thinking about this day for a long time and that she was glad its over. She is 56 years old today.
Records of the 1975 escape indicate that she and another inmate were discovered missing from Florida Correctional Institution (now Lowell C.I.) during a routine count of inmates. Despite an immediate search involving multiple law enforcement agencies, Carroll has been at large since. The other inmate was subsequently recaptured.
Carroll was using the name and social security number of a West Virginia woman but her own birthdate, which is April 20, 1954. She is 56 today.
The Florida Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit has had notable success in recapturing fugitives since its inception in January 2007, using existing staff and resources, and works aggressively with law enforcement to develop and follow leads. Since that time, 413 fugitives have been recaptured. An inmate is eligible to be placed on the list if s/he has been missing for more than 30 days, and some cases are older (and colder) than 60 years.
The Florida Department of Corrections has not had an inmate escape from a secure perimeter since 2006.
they must have taken a long siesta.
Yikes she is only 56! Well she won’t have to worry about her retirement income and how is she going to make it.
“Hellooo, baaaaaaaby!”
She was a cutie back then. From the perspective of time, five years looks like it was a small price to pay now.
Amazing how guilt can increase over the years. But I guess us men all know that (other than Lindsey Graham).
I personally believe she was actually not guilty....in 1975.
Knowing you are a fugitive is probably hell on the nerves. Waking up every day knowing the next knock on your door might be the police...
I am sure she regrets escaping now. It would have all be done and ancient history now if she had just done her time quietly and made the best of it afterwards.
FL has more illegals than AZ and they are bankrupting the state, engaging in crime, defrauding taxpayers and the RINOs who control FL house and senate do nothing.
Great they caught this poor dumb woman but RINO Charlie Crist is too busy on his tanning bed to deal with the state being bankrupted by illegals. Crist is buddies with ACORN and SEIU.
She was a cutie back then...
(looks at current picture)
...but time can sure be a b_tch.
I like saving pictures like this to show my son and daughter not to base a relationship on solely on what someone looks like in their teens or twenties. I see some of the girls I grew up with, that were beautiful at 18 but look like death warmed over by their mid 30's and others that are as good looking at 40 as they were at 18.
I can hear Tommy Lea Jones saying that just by reading it.
And they want to use the SS # as a national ID...
Is there anything you'd trust the federal government to do well...???
I think it’s a waste of taxpayer’s money to incarcerate her. My guess is that she is sick with no insurance and ratted on her self...
You heard it here first.
I agree that time is hard on people, true, but life can be harder. She made some bad choices and I’ll bet she’s regretting them now.
LOL!
You beat me to it. Next we’ll be hearing she needs a heart transplant or something.
These days, I believe it.
“You beat me to it. Next well be hearing she needs a heart transplant or something.”
Well, the woman she stole the SS number from gets to collect her social security and medicare... What else can she do?
