PARIS — A French lawyer for director Roman Polanski, imprisoned in Switzerland, says a new bail offer will be filed Monday and it will be a "very, very significant" cash amount. Swiss authorities rejected an offer Friday, considering the 76-year-old filmmaker awaiting a decision on extradition to the United States a high flight risk. They noted it was not a cash offer. Herve Temime told France-Info radio Sunday the latest offer is in cash. He wouldn’t say how much. He said Polanski would accept the extradition decision "whatever it is" and assured his client would never behave "like a fugitive."

Fugitive murder suspect Ryan Jenkins has been found dead in B.C. Jenkins was charged with murdering and mutilating his ex-wife Jasmine Fiore, in an apparent attempt to get away with the crime. Fiore’s fingers and teeth were removed — fingerprints and dental records are usually how homicide victims are identified — but the 28-year-old’s body was identified by the serial number on her breast implants. After an international manhunt and an apparent attempt to flee U.S. justice by returning to his native Canada, Jenkins apparently gave up his game of international hide-and-seek Sunday. His body was found in a hotel...

Claims of the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden seem to be as common as sightings of David Duchovny at porn shops. It is tempting to dismiss all such accounts as hearsay and rumors, but current reports focus on three areas of the world as the most likely hideout for the globe’s most wanted man: Parachinar, Pakistan; Chitra, Pakistan; and most shockingly, the Islamic Republic of Iran. While it is often argued bin Laden would never receive harbor on Iranian territory, this is the location most identified by eyewitness reports available to the public, allowing for a detailed chronology of his...

On This Day In History November 24, 1971 Hijacker parachutes into thunderstorm A hijacker calling himself D.B. Cooper parachutes from a Northwest Orient Airlines 727 into a raging thunderstorm over Washington State. He had $200,000 in ransom money in his possession. Cooper commandeered the aircraft shortly after takeoff, showing a flight attendant something that looked like a bomb and informing the crew that he wanted $200,000, four parachutes, and "no funny stuff." The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, where authorities met Cooper's demands and evacuated most of the passengers. Cooper then demanded that the plane fly toward Mexico at...

A KEY suspect in the alleged plot to mount an attack in Germany on the scale of 9/11 is on the run in Britain, German security officials disclosed yesterday. Scotland Yard counterterrorism detectives are hunting the man, who escaped from Germany after a plot to explode bombs at Frankfurt airport and a US airbase. The collective power of the bombs would have exceeded those in Madrid and London in 2004 and 2005. The plot was foiled on September 4 when three men were arrested at a rented holiday apartment near the central German town of Kassel. Police recovered chemicals and...

If fugitive Democratic fundraiser Norman Hsu had not booked a train compartment across from Willow Springs resident Joanne Segale, he might still be on the lam. The retired Sonora Elementary bus driver, concerned after a night in which her neighbor had not stir-red, alerted officials after peeking through the compartment's window to see a bare-chested man wedged between the door and bed. She had no idea it was Hsu, who skipped a Sept. 5 court hearing — losing his $2 million bail — to flee the law and a growing media clamor over his past fundraising and business dealings. Prior...

They caught him! He's been arrested ... for the 12th time!! This ugly fella has been in and out and out and in and is such a repeat offender he could serve as the mascot for the revolving door of justice. He's a former psychiatric patient, homeless with a lengthy record dating back to 1981. WHY was he loose on the street and able to attack this poor woman? Because our courts have NO spine! NO teeth! It's the 'awww, poor you' defense all over again. Oh my when will we demand much more from our judges, our courts, our...

BOGOTA, Colombia - Authorities captured a fugitive right-wing warlord Tuesday accused in massacres and of running a murderous criminal band involved in drug trafficking and extortion, officials said. Ever Veloza, one of the few top paramilitary bosses who fled into hiding rather than embrace a government peace deal, was arrested in the turbulent banana-growing Uraba region on the Caribbean coast, police said. Better known by his alias "Hernan Hernandez," Veloza once commanded the Banana and Calima blocs of the United Self-Defense Forces, known by its Spanish initials as AUC. The two blocs are blamed for hundreds of murders of human...

the county coroner, Dr. Samuel Gerber... stated, "It's obvious that the doctor did it." He told detectives to go to the hospital where Sheppard had been taken and get a confession... Gerber finally held an inquest in a school gymnasium. More than two hundred spectators, mostly housewives, filled the seats. They laughed and hooted at testimony and cheered when Gerber had Sheppard's lawyer removed for trying to have the outbursts noted in the record. Gerber questioned Dr. Sam for five hours with no legal counsel present.... Even that was not the end. In the 1990s Sheppard's son, Samuel Reese Sheppard,...
