Some New Yorkers see their city as the center of the universe. But over the weekend, all eyes were focused on Arizona after the states governor signed the countrys most stringent immigration bill into law.
On Saturday, New York area politicians and immigrants groups denounced the measure, which allows police to question people on the suspicion that they may be here illegally. As the Daily News reported, Mayor Bloomberg said the new measure could hurt foreign investment. Sen. Chuck Schumer called it mean-spirited and Bill DeBlasio, the public advocate, said it was Un-American.
On Sunday, the Rev. Al Sharpton said he would join a coalition of activists and travel to Arizona to protest the measure.
The Arizona immigration bill is an affront to the civil rights of all Americans and an attempt to legalize racial profiling, he said in a statement.
Joining Sharpton was a host of New York Latino leaders, including representatives from the Puerto Rican Bar Association, which is offering legal assistance to fight the measure in court.
Defenders of the Arizona bill said it will push the federal government to implement better border protection measures, and Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer has said racial profiling will not be part of the policy.
On May 1, immigrant rights activists will hold a series of rallies across the country to protest the Arizona law. In New York, the rally will take place in Foley Square in downtown Manhattan.

This was pre 9-11 and I did not feel harassed or Threatened.
Its the execution of the request for ID that should determine the outcome of the new Arizona law.
But I will add one point. Remove the reason for the illegal immigrants coming here and the majority will self export themselves back home.
The people of Chicago are requesting the National Guard come in to restore order in a state of anarchy all the while crying about the enforcememt of laws in Arizona to prevent anarchy .
We need to tell the bill’s detractors what we were told when healthcare was passed against the will of the people:
“Don’t you worry, you might be angry now but its because you don’t understand the bill, you’ll love it once the bill takes effect and you see all the benefits that you get.”
All these blowhards are doing is pandering to their despicable constituents. Nothing more, nothing less.
“Un-American”
Hmmmm, let’s break that down.....it is leaving our future democrat voters disenfranchised. That’s the real reason.
He has to show his Liberal massas that he is doing SOMETHING to earn his pay.
Al “I’m not so” Sharpton is a race-baiting racist loser. Why doesn’t he move to Arizona if he is so concerned about his illegal alien brothers? What a tool and a fool. Hopefully when the counterrevolution wins this fall, he will be relegated to some alley trying to find food in a dumpster. What a poor excuse for a human he is. Al you are a shameless loser.
I love it when people like Sharpton and Bloomberg attempt to tell others what’s good for them. I really don’t think Arizonans give a fig what those two mushheads think.
NYC will wake up one day to the Bloomberg diet—he’s already attacking fast foods and salt. You better like it, too, or have your butt consigned to some gulag somewhere. Perhaps the Mayor could ask Russia for help. It was very good at the gulag thing.
All of us out in the middle (away from the coasts) are sick and tired of being micromanaged by those people on both coast, more so from those on the East Coast.
It is not Sharpton or Bloomberg’s concern what happens in AZ. Most certainly those of us in CO, AZ or anywhere else in the middle don’t give a rats @$$ what happens in NYC or LA.
I’m sure the Guv and Sheriff Joe would be willing to meet with obumma at Sky Harbor to discuss the issue....so long as the prez could show his proof of citizenship.....
No one is outraged at the thousands of Americans killed by illegals or their absolute destruction of border states via anchor babies and twisting social services for themselves?
Screw you, Al and the Midget.
Maybe Sharpton can go to Arizona and hold a press conference with Tawana Brawley at his side.
That should do the trick!!
Bloomberg lives in an ivory tower lifestyle. He might be a little more upset if his cows were getting killed, his ranch was being overrun, and his family member was shot on his ATV trying to check his stock water tanks.
There isn’t one person in 10,000 living on the Eastern or Western Coasts that has a clue what is going on in what they call ‘flyover country’.
100-200 K? That’s all?... hell you got room for plenty more... have them to you by the weekend!
At the height of the last “boom” the figures were as high as 500K in our city. Many have either self-deported or moved to cheaper parts of the country over the past three years.
Ping!
“Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.” - Rasumussen
