Arizona Governor Jan Brewer last week signed a new law into effect that authorizes local police to stop and verify the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being an illegal immigrant. A new Rasmussen Reports telephone survey finds that 60% of voters nationwide favor such a law, while 31% are opposed.
Seventy-seven percent (77%) of Republicans support the law along with 62% of voters not affiliated with either major party. Democratic voters are evenly divided on the measure.
At the same time, however, 58% of all voters are at least somewhat concerned that efforts to identify and deport illegal immigrants will also end up violating the civil rights of some U.S. citizens. That figure includes 29% who are Very Concerned about possible civil rights violations.....

I think there is a simpler and better way: Put the citizenship status and visa status/expiration on the drivers license.
You shouldnt be driving on US roads if you are an illegal alien *anyway*, so all the cop needs to ask for anyway is a driver’s license. Either your citizenship status is known or its not. No need for “papers” unless the drivers license doesnt have it or is expired.
“If a cop stops me for running a stop sign, does that mean he demand proof of citizenship for me and everyone in my car?”
I think for the driver, that is a reasonable expectation. We MUST insist that drivers are valid drivers, at least on the roads. We cannot allow illegal aliens to be driving without valid licenses, and they shouldnt be getting licenses - right? ... so non-enforcement leads to absurdities. If you cant have them obey immigration law, how can you expect them to obey traffic law?
“Just how do you propose we enforce the law” ... that’s the point, isn’t it. we have a law, but without local law enforcement and the million eyes and ears they bring, it is impossible to enforce.
I think the civil rights/convenience concerns are addressed by making sure request are only done based on reasonable suspicion / other violation law enforcement actions, and not ‘fishing expedition’ demands for papers.
I would certainly take up handing my DL with citizenship status over taking my shoes off at the airport.
The first is more security for no inconvenience, the second is less liberty with little help to our security.
The immigration bill is about increasing the Democrat majority and will do NOTHING to actually address or solve the illegal immigration problem. The leftists know this, which is why they are squealing so hard against an enforcement approach which will actually solve the issue over time.
Solving illegal immigration is the LAST thing the left wants - it will kill their hopes for a 'realignment' to socialism.
You make a good point. Drug Cartels and abductions I can deal with but don’t even think about raising the price of my lawn care.
If you have a driver’s license it will be in the computer~ now that most LEO have computers in their car they will likely even be able to see your picture. You may get a warning or ticket for not carrying it with you.
LET'S SEE IF WE GOT THIS RIGHT.

I JUST WANTED TO MAKE SURE WE HAD A FIRM GRASP ON THE SITUATION.
That is why he probaly won-t go to Arizona.
I really didn’t know it was THAT bad in the south Arizona area. Used to go to Green Valley many times, but not in the last 2 1/2 years!! WOW!!
Do you feel like your living on pins and needles?
Well, I wouldn’t judge the rest of the country by New Jersey.
Never talk to the police. Nothing good can come of it.
“Dont blame the illegals, because if you were given the option to make 10 cents a day, or 10 dollars an hour, what would you do?”
I guess we shouldn’t blame bank robbers, either.
It’s kind of sad that only 60% of the nation believes in basic law abiding, much less, say, toilet training?
We are becoming filthy and the gay aristocracy leads the way in the media.
We’re all humans and we all should let people crap themselves in public too, and do filthy things and lose pride and have illegals clean up after us, we deserve it, according to Bush and all the Dr.Spocked Rinos who love to wallow with nice skanky smelly Pelosi and Zero the puppet Rain Man and Forest Gumpy evil leader (sarc off)
He just can't help himself.
Hmmmmm........do I smell a troll?
I think that it’s ok in the cities/towns, it’s just that all the formerly more-or-less pristine areas are torn up. Buenos Aires NWR is closed, parts of Organ Pipe Cactus NM are closed, most of the other national forest/BLM, NPS areas are scarier than heck -— you can’t hike, bike, camp, explore ghost towns, go to wine country, or do much without feeling a target on your back.
We took my parents down to Arivaca a couple of years ago, ohmygosh, scariest thing ever. Very eerie all around and only BP vehicles.
When I last drove near the border “fence” near Douglas, I was really creeped out. Felt like bullets would start whizzing by any second. The higher parts of the wall make it seem like we’re in some ghetto nether region.
I have so many friends who go out and hunt and do stuff still, one by the very luck of the draw had bent down to tie a shoe, or he would have been likely gunned down by the long stream of smugglers, carrying machine guns. This was just a couple of months ago, near Douglas. He stayed hidden in the grass until they were gone, then he called the BP and tried to sneak back to his truck (the smugglers were hanging around). He was fully loaded but one against several, probably not much of a chance.
BTTT
In Maryland the police do not need any reason pull you over and run your tags as they are on cruise duty. They routinely run random vehicle tags to check for violations such as insurance lapse violations. In the process of course, your registration, insurance and drivers license is scrutinized. I can attest to this personally. Should not be a problem for Arizona to do the same. Good ole Peoples Republic of Maryland!
Okay...
I’m still confused. I’m a citizen. If I’m walkin’ along in my shorts and t-shirt, and don’t have my wallet on me, how do I prove citizenship?
Heck, all I’ve got in my wallet is my driver’s license. Given that New Mexico will issue driver’s licenses to illegals with Matrícula Consular cards, how does that serve to ID me as a legal resident? Do I need to keep a passport on me? What?
