Clinton chose to fight the media every day. He stayed up late plotting strategy, lost discipine, and boosted ratings as people waiting breathlessly every day to play the ping-pong game and see what the other side's "rebuttal" would be.
Bush went to bed early, said what needed to be said and refused to be baited. He was able to fight the war on terror without being distracted and the MSM's ratings went WAY down because there was much less ping-pong.

The Drive-Bys have been covering for the rats since before most of us were born. They said Reagan was sleeping during briefings and he was a moron when he was awake. They candy coated the failures of Carter, and they took down Nixon. We just didn't know it because there was no Rush, Fox News, or Free Republic.
Reagan ended the Fairness Doctrine of the FCC in 87. This cleared the way for the resurgance of talk radio and the new media.
