Baker looks both ways on gay rights (Loving his gay pet rock)

WHICH CHARLIE Baker is running for governor? The one who picked “a gay fella’’ as his running mate? Or the one who ran from a bill sponsored by the “gay fella’’ the moment conservatives turned up the political heat?

Baker, the GOP candidate who hopes to topple Governor Deval Patrick, was once famously described as the smartest man in state government. So far, he isn’t running the smartest campaign.

As a candidate, he seems stiff, unsure, and overly defensive. And, now, Baker is starting to look far too eager to please the Sarah Palin crowd.

Consider the clumsy turnaround he did on a bill that would make it illegal to discriminate on the basis of “gender identity or expression.’’ Social conservatives have dubbed it “the bathroom bill,’’ contending it would sanction unisex bathrooms and locker rooms. But Baker, a Harvard-educated wonk, knows better. Harvard Pilgrim, the health insurer he headed until recently, had a similar policy forbidding discrimination on the basis of gender identity.

Yet, pressed by delegates at the Republican state convention, Baker vowed to veto the proposal, which was co-sponsored by his openly gay running mate, state Senate minority leader Richard R. Tisei. Defending himself afterwards, Baker insisted he wasn’t bowing to the scare-mongers.

“I think a guy who supports gay marriage and is pro-choice and has been pretty clear on those and picked a gay fella as his running mate is pretty much not pandering to much of anybody,’’ he said, resting his hand on Tisei’s shoulder.

Think again, Charlie. Treating Tisei like a gay pet rock while abandoning his cause is pandering — very awkward pandering.

Baker is a Romney-clone, selected without the Peoples’ vote.

Baker's much more conservative competition is Cahill.

“(RomneyCARE) has nearly bankrupted the state.
They promised us it was going to bring down costs,”
Cahill, referring to then-Gov. Mitt Romney
and other political leaders who crafted the state health-care law.
“As treasurer, maybe I should have questioned it more, but I wasn’t at the table,
I wasn’t asked to comment on it,
and what I’ve seen over the last four years has frightened me,
in terms of what the costs are.”

Cahill is running second in the race and every conservative Republican should get behind him. It will be a big slap in the politically anointed crowd that is the Mass GOP. Who ever heard of not having primaries? I thought only Democrats did that.

I don't see a refutation of the claim, just "he knows better". Where is the evidence?

PENN has unisex bathrooms on campus in the dorms and has for decades.

Typically I spell it with two s’s. There is a reason but my post would be expunged if I said why.

A local Democrat. A “Universal Delegate” to their convention no less, called him that to me on several occasions. I said I thought the Democrats were the party of tolerance. He exploded, the fraud that he is.

He usually wears a fedora. He was a good state senator and I supported him until he went full blown anti-traditional values on me. He had the worst kept secret in his district. He never made it an issue. Then when he became titular head of the GOP in MA he and Jennifer Nassour both announce that MassGOP would no longer support those values. Well then, who will?

I agree; it will be an even bigger slap if Baker goes down while Perry and Hudak go to congress. Scott Brown is going to be vital in October/November this year.

Nope. Thank you for sharing FM. Baker is making Patrick look better, a feat I thought was darn near impossible.

I will state it here, today and now:

If Tim Cahill were to drop out of the race for whatever reason I will vote for Deval Patrick over Chazz Baker. Baker is a Crist-type RINO.

I wouldn’t do that.

But there are cases when the proper vote is to bring some dog crap with you into the polling place smear it on your unmarked ballot and cast it.

A good example. Louisiana Gubernatorial runoff 1991.

"He usually wears a fedora."

To ruin the look for straight guys? What a jerk.

"He was a good state senator"

I have trouble believing that.
