(JOHNSTOWN, PA) Republican 12th Congressional District candidate William Russell today called on U.S. Navy Secretary Ray Mabus to reconsider his decision to name the 10th San Antonio-class amphibious transport dock ship after the late Rep. John P. Murtha. Russell called the decision an insult to all the brave men and women serving in uniform, as a result of Mr. Murthas 2006 comments calling Marines cold-blooded killers. Russell also pointed out that that Navy tradition calls for the naming of San Antonio class ships after famous war battles and not former Congressmen.
Even the media is questioning Secretary Mabuss decision to name a new ship after Mr. Murtha, Russell said. The Washington Times called it (Mr. Murthas) highest undeserved honor, and as a veteran I find this particularly offensive. In fact, I stood up against Mr. Murthas comments back in 2008 when it was a matter of conviction and not just political expediency. I was even threatened for my position of defending those brave Marines.
Russell has called on veterans groups around the country to express their displeasure with the Navy Secretarys decision.
I am a conservative. I believe in the sovereignty and security of this one nation, under God. I believe in the sanctity of life and that life begins at conception. I believe in marriage between one man and one woman. I believe that all children in our school systems should be educated in English and taught the civic duties and responsibilities of citizenship and patriotism. I believe that we have the responsibility and obligation to control our borders and determine who is allowed to live and work in our country. I believe in private property rights and that the death tax should be killed. I believe government economic policies should reward those who build business or save and invest their money. I believe in the right to bear arms and the right of self defense. I believe in rugged individualism and that no one owes me anything just because I live and breathe. I believe we should all practice charity in some form or fashion, especially to those who are suffering and least fortunate. But charity must be voluntary and spring from a spirit of altruism and love for your neighbor. I believe that imposed systems of wealth redistribution destroy families, produce a culture of dependence and hurt everyone. Finally, I believe there is room to acknowledge the role of our Creator in public life as stated in the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution. ---Bill Russell in his own words .

A popular bumper sticker while he was governor of Mississippi.
He was a disaster! I see nothing has changed.
So small minded. The USS Garbage Scow Murtha, pride of the fleet.
I hope he can get this done but “they” run the Pentagon right now. It’s not the same Pentagon that we used to know and love.
From what I’ve heard and read about him, he’s an absolute cretin who loathes our military. That being the case, Obama must have figured he’d make the perfect NAVSEC.

Good for Russell. Most republican candidates would have just hidden under their desk as usual, not wanting to “offend” anyone. Right Sen. McCain??!!
ROFL! How appropriate.
Bill Russell ping!
No wonder the PA GOP picked someone else to run besides a stupid carpetbagger.
LOL!
Willie boy forgot his meds again today.
And, thus, the endless Democrap self-lionizing continues.
Since ALL American taxpayers paid for it, how come the Dems got to name the ship??
Thanks for posting the link, smokingfrog. I was one of the first 100 to sign. It’s good to see so many continue to sign on!
LOL!
