Helen Thomas: The Last Defiant Roar Of the Old Media Dinosaurs [FR buckhead incident mentioned]
BigJournalism.com ^ | 5/1/2010 | Kevin L Martin

Posted on 05/01/2010 9:08:11 AM PDT by Notwithstanding

Helen Thomas simply longs for the days when reporters and pundits could report spin, lies and opinion as fact and were never held accountable outside of page A-16 retractions.

The new media’s finest moment came when in 2004 CBS’s Dan Rather attempted to influence a national election (much like his predecessor Walter Cronkite did with the Vietnam War after the Tet Offensive), but unlike then, now there is a new media filled with grassroots activists who were going to hold the old media accountable and one of those activists on the Conservative Site Free-Republic under the handle “Buckhead,” was able to expose Rather’s “official documents” concerning Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard as forgeries. Rather eventually lost his job as a result.

Wasn't that a great time when FR exposed Dan Rather's "th" in the memo. I learned more about the IBM Selectric typewriter during that time than I thought I would ever know.

We had FReepers that are experts in type fonts, the selectric typewriter ball configuations and varientions and everything else about the selectric adding to the discussion. He he!

And watching Dan Rather driving the TANG train at full speed not knowing that we took the approaching bridge out.

The fact that the media itself didn’t run Rather off the airwaves and printer, tells us something about their total lack of character and objectivity.

Very well said. You just put a big smile on my face. That sums up very well what was taking place on FR at the time. Wasn't it fun to watch!

Absolutely .. and I bet if there had been cameras in the board rooms .. we would have seen a lot of “deer in the headlights” looks.

Awesome!!!

And .. if I remember correctly, it was Brit Hume (of Fox News) who gave FreeRepublic.com the full credit for the exposure - by saying, “Let’s give credit where credit’s due”.

Ms. Thomas also seems upset by the fact that a White House she strongly supports no longer looks to the White House press corps to get its message out as this White House uses Twitter, Facebook and YouTube to advise its supporters and friendly pundits.

Consider the profound meaning of this statement. The mainstream media actually sees itself as propagandists for the regime. It is their job to spin, tell lies and promote a political agenda.

They are here to do the bidding of their master: President Barack Hussein Obama.

Mmmmmmmmmm. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Mmmmmmmmmmmm.

That is certainly true. And, to be sure, the original media was filled with

polemics (e.g. Coulter)
emotional appeals to truth (e.g. Beck)
strident American exceptionalsim (e.g. Limbaugh and Levin) clever humor (all)
populism (e.g. Hannity and O’Reilly) and
appeals to religious truth (e.g. Ingraham and Beck).

Everything old is new again....

No picture of Helen Thomas should ever be used! At least, not in the presence of children and faint-hearted adults!

If photos of "Her Ugliness" are used, disclaimers must accompany the photo. i.e.: Looking at this photo can cause nightmares, uncontrollable shaking and sweats, buggy eyes, vomiting, etc.

“those with cell-phones believe they are photographers and that the opinions of these people can ruin the lives of public and political figures.”

The bottom line of her complaint is the loss of the power to ruin lives. That is what the big media loved about their power. I wonder if the old hag remembers Richard Nixon.
