Saint Paul police officer David Longbehn stood alone on a shady street near Lake Phalen on Saturday morning, one of hundreds on high alert during a tense hunt for two ex-cons who three hours before had gunned down a Maplewood officer in cold blood.
When a young man emerged from the woods behind him carrying a metal toolbox, Longbehn approached to question him.
Suddenly, the man attacked Longbehn and the two grappled on the ground. The attacker straddled the officer and hit him over and over again, breaking his nose and possibly the bones around both eyes. Finally able to reach his weapon, Longbehn pulled the trigger several times.
The man suspected of killing Maplewood Sgt. Joseph Bergeron -- an ex-con whose recent prison stint was for a double shooting -- collapsed onto E. Ivy Avenue.

Vote your liberal judges OUT in November!!!
You gotta let the criminals out in order to keep the lawyers, judges and cops employed. It also helps government grow bigger.
I’m guessing the perp took a plea deal in the robbery/shooting case?
For another couple of billion dollars, we could have rehabilitated him.
Yes, he did.....
Liberal judges and idiot government prosecutors, they are a menace to society. Someone should find the transcripts, I'm sure they said he is no future danger to the community.
I bet that judge and prosecutor would not blink an eye telling those two girls that the man who killed their father in cold blood deserved to spend only 27 months behind bars. Liberals like that don't have a conscience.
“””Just seven weeks ago, Jones had walked out of St. Cloud prison after serving 27 months for first-degree aggravated robbery in which two people were shot, though an assault-with-a-dangerous-weapon charge was dropped in a plea bargain, according to police and public records.”””
Even the crazy Franken leftists in Minnesota ought to be up in arms over this.
This is beyond the pale to merely sentence someone for 27 months for shooting two people during a robbery.
And the previous crime wasn’t anywhere near his first felony.....
This is getting old....
His mother said he was a very good boy. Think she would say that to the twin 13-year old girls who don’t have a daddy anymore?
Minnesota is one of those uncivilized states with no death penalty. We should not be surprised that they are easy on criminals.
The question comes up every election. Where do I go to learn about these judges we are supposed to be confirming, or electing to office?
Haven’t found a good source of information yet. Found tons of BS over the years, but no quality information about judges to help know how to vote.
Any clues anybody?
This is why I like jury trials. Even a jury of idiots would have found him guilty in the previous case and an informed jury would have put him away for decades.
In my county, I follow the court decisions closely, on line and in the local media.....you can’t always find what you are looking for, but, many times you are able to get names and see patterns....
Sounds like the LEO took care of the rehabilitation for a lot less.
I think this rehabilitation took.
Plea bargains should be illegal in felony cases......
What-ya expect when you got voters like THIS running around up here?
Pick a neighborhood........
perps record and picture (the dead perp)
Okay, how about Selby and Dale?
Selby and Dale is exactly what it used to be, just worse...
Thanks for that...I have that data base link at work.....just not here.
I worry for my property there.
Sheriff Taylor's boy grown up? /s
It’s a damn shame that the good samaritan jogger was only armed with his running shoes and was no real help to Sgt. Joseph Bergeron...
I just have to ask how this punk was able to get close enough to the officer to be able to engage him hands on. The cop knew he was looking for someone who could and would kill, why did he let him get that close. Wouldn’t it look the least bit suspicious for the guy to come out of the woods with a tool box? What was he working on, a tree? This is just so sad. I’m not trying to lay blame but this situation should have called for increased awareness and somewhat looser rules of engagement.
He does look a little like Opie. Looking at the pictures of the perps, they all were little kids once, I wonder what they were like as kids? Deviant?
This guy looks like he’s a Meth user.
there are reasons for not marrying your cousin, brother, sister, parent....
I do. ; )
All good questions, jstaff....
I hope once this hero recovers and gets to go home that we’ll get a clearer picture of just how this happened...
>”there are reasons for not marrying your cousin, brother, sister, parent....”
I know! Gotta tread easy around here. Never know if you’re talking to someones sister-wife.
i’m not sure whether to laugh or not ;)
>”im not sure whether to laugh or not ;)”
Dont. Its for real up here. I’m not kidding.
Prayers up for the injured officer and for the family of the murdered officer.
Don’t know why I thought it, but my first thought was that the Amish were at it again.
I have to say, his hairdo is much better in the top photos than the unkempt do in the lower photo.
That’s because those pesky Amish are into everything.
since this was in MN, and there is a large Islamic population, I wonder if he converted in jail?
...Doe’s someone tip you off ahead of time or do you just set up the rutting season on your own???
...Naaa, that’s Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, before they got famous...
poor Ben Affleck, after Gigli his career was toast.
>”...Does someone tip you off ahead of time or do you just set up the rutting season on your own???”
The rut coincides with hunting season around here. And, around here, we dont need no stinking hunting season. But then again alot of it goes to feeding their families, which I can find no fault in.
...Never cared for Affleck as an actor, or his films. On the other side, Matt Damon, I do like some of his work. Seems like, pick roles carefully, like jobs, some times ya get burned...
and someone i know got over 5 yrs for breaking into a home with baseball bats and one shotgun and no one was actually hurt, just scared the crap out of the homes occupants. (there was a history behind this crime so it wasn’t random) I won’t defend the person he screwed up badly and got time. But according to the prosecutor it was the worst crime ever in this region of the state. (which is bull because there are many in which people have been actually injured or died, most of those involving minorities)
“...I wonder if he converted in jail?”
A lot of them do.
