Saint Paul police officer David Longbehn stood alone on a shady street near Lake Phalen on Saturday morning, one of hundreds on high alert during a tense hunt for two ex-cons who three hours before had gunned down a Maplewood officer in cold blood.

When a young man emerged from the woods behind him carrying a metal toolbox, Longbehn approached to question him.

Suddenly, the man attacked Longbehn and the two grappled on the ground. The attacker straddled the officer and hit him over and over again, breaking his nose and possibly the bones around both eyes. Finally able to reach his weapon, Longbehn pulled the trigger several times.

The man suspected of killing Maplewood Sgt. Joseph Bergeron -- an ex-con whose recent prison stint was for a double shooting -- collapsed onto E. Ivy Avenue.

You gotta let the criminals out in order to keep the lawyers, judges and cops employed. It also helps government grow bigger.

I’m guessing the perp took a plea deal in the robbery/shooting case?

For another couple of billion dollars, we could have rehabilitated him.

Just seven weeks ago, Jones had walked out of St. Cloud prison after serving 27 months for first-degree aggravated robbery in which two people were shot, though an assault-with-a-dangerous-weapon charge was dropped in a plea bargain

Liberal judges and idiot government prosecutors, they are a menace to society. Someone should find the transcripts, I'm sure they said he is no future danger to the community.

I bet that judge and prosecutor would not blink an eye telling those two girls that the man who killed their father in cold blood deserved to spend only 27 months behind bars. Liberals like that don't have a conscience.

Even the crazy Franken leftists in Minnesota ought to be up in arms over this.

This is beyond the pale to merely sentence someone for 27 months for shooting two people during a robbery.

His mother said he was a very good boy. Think she would say that to the twin 13-year old girls who don’t have a daddy anymore?

Minnesota is one of those uncivilized states with no death penalty. We should not be surprised that they are easy on criminals.

The question comes up every election. Where do I go to learn about these judges we are supposed to be confirming, or electing to office?

Haven’t found a good source of information yet. Found tons of BS over the years, but no quality information about judges to help know how to vote.

Any clues anybody?

This is why I like jury trials. Even a jury of idiots would have found him guilty in the previous case and an informed jury would have put him away for decades.

In my county, I follow the court decisions closely, on line and in the local media.....you can’t always find what you are looking for, but, many times you are able to get names and see patterns....

Good luck.

Sounds like the LEO took care of the rehabilitation for a lot less.

I think this rehabilitation took.
