Healthcare's Impact On the Low-Skilled Worker
real clear markets ^ | 5/7/10 | Diana Furchtgott-Roth

Posted on 05/07/2010 1:23:34 PM PDT by Nachum

Low-skilled workers have some of the highest unemployment rates in America. Adults without high school diplomas face an unemployment rate of 14.5%, almost three times as high as rates for college graduates, and well above the national average of 9.7%. The unemployment rate for teens, another low-skill group, is 26%.

Reasonable people likely presume that Congress and the administration are doing everything possible to help low-skilled workers get jobs.

But, come 2014, the new health care bill will make it harder for employers to hire low-skill workers. And, as workplaces around the country prepare to implement the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, employers are considering how best to comply. For some companies, that means that low-wage and part-time jobs will start to go, not in 2014, but now.

And these will be the first to turn to crime when they can’t survive without a job.

Bonnie and Clyde were seen as heroes for a reason.

uh oh. I don’t have a college degree yet I work in Information Technology via a series of certifications. I find those twenty and thirty somethings WITH a degree sadly lacking in grey matter. What I had learned in the sixth grade way back when is what they are covering in remedial Sophomore year university.

and well above the national average of 9.7%.

National average is now 9.9(actually higher than that but they won't admit to it).

Well gosh, I guess we just found out that it sucks to be a low-skilled worker. Good thing somebody alerted the media.

Who would have thought especially since we keep our border open and invite more to come to the party.

That's right. Everyone should be a lawyer, a doctor, a programmer, a nurse, etc.

No more ditch diggers for us.

Even if the employer does provide healthcare insurance if even one making $80k or less, opts for the govt subsidy for healthcare, the employer will be fined based on every employee on his payroll.

You know, with an unemployment future of 17% or greater with healthcare, we probably need to import more unskilled labor. What say we Americanize all of central America?

And we bring in 1.2 million legal immigrants annually, the vast majority of whom are poor, uneducated, and unskilled. The 500,000 illegals who enter each year are even worse.

Low skilled workers are doomed. No skills no job.

Low skills are the result of personal laziness and a choice not to be educated.

Could you give an example?

All of the ILLEGAL labor in this country is directly to blame for this problem. As far as Congress and the President doing everything possible to help low skilled workers get jobs- until the border is secure and immigration laws are strictly enforced this is simply not true.

Remember the numbers of uninsured people in the U.S. which were used to help pass the health care law? The majority of the uninsured are also illegals. The high cost of health care can also be laid at the door step of illegals, they don't pay for their health care, they don't have insurance so health care is higher for everyone that does pay or has insurance.

Illegals are the elephant in the room on so many issues, and many just don't see it or want to bring it up because it doesn't fit their agenda.

Low skills are the result of personal laziness and a choice not to be educated.

Somewhat of an elitist eh? The media considers anyone that works a blue collar job to be a low-skilled worker even though many blue collar workers are highly skilled. Many truly low-skilled workers are simply young- have not had time to build skills- high school and college age workers. Were you born a highly skilled worker?

There was always a place in America for those who did not wish to go to college or be trapped in an office. Many started off in entry level jobs in agriculture, construction, and the service industries- then worked their way up to management and even business ownership. There were the important first jobs for high school and college students that helped them build work ethic for future jobs. Then our government decided to look the other way when illegals began to pour into this country and take those entry level jobs for low-skilled workers. Low skilled workers will always exist, and have contributed greatly to our country. We have a choice- we can support them by getting rid of all the ILLEGAL labor in this country or we can support them through social programs when there are no jobs for them.

.....Somewhat of an elitist eh? ......

Perhaps but then was then and now is now. I interact with “low skilled” and they invariably chose to not educate them selves in High school and especially after.

Very few people actually work any more in the old manner. Those who don’t have the ability to develop pretty high technical skill are doomed. There is a tendency among some to shun leaning to deal with the computers and electronics that rule the work place.

Right now I know many young people who want work and are good workers. Maybe that is not true in your area, but in many rural areas there are many young people who just want a chance and it is not fair that they have to compete with illegals for entry jobs.

You sound as out of touch as most politicians, thinking everything is about computers and electronics- that is not true. Computers and electronics are important but we still need people to just do an honest days work and we have citizens willing to do it.

Your user name leads me to believe you are in our nation’s capitol- maybe you should get out and about in this country and see what goes on out of your own circle of knowledge. You might be surprised.

Example 1: I see college graduates every day at registers who can’t make change; they have to look down at the register to subtract 1.87 from a twenty dollar bill and two pennies.

Example 2: At work, a young woman with a degree in English asked an older woman to “help her with percentages because I just don’t get it!”

Example 3: Spelling is ATROCIOUS from twenty somethings and even thirty somethings

Unreal! Not sure they are learning anything OTHER than community activism.

Ok that’s pretty pathetic. There are days when I’m too tired from working to do simple math quickly but I eventually figure it out. To be 20 years old and NOT KNOW how to do it is just...wow.
