LONDON (AP) -- A TV communications satellite is drifting out of control thousands of miles above the Earth, threatening to wander into another satellite's orbit and interfere with cable programming across the United States, the satellites' owners said Tuesday.
Communications company Intelsat said it lost control of the Galaxy 15 satellite on April 8....

minor correction “The Shuttles maximum altitude is somewhere between 400 and 600 miles” Shuttle got close to 400 miles servicing Hubble.
I bought a bourgeois house in the Hollywood hills
With a trunkload of hundred thousand dollar bills
Man came by to hook up my cable TV
We settled in for the night my baby and me
We switched round and round til half-past down
There was fifty-seven channels and notin on
Well now home entertainment was my babys wish
So I hopped into town for a satellite dish
I tied it to the top of my Japanese car
I came home and I pointed it out into the stars
A message came back from the great beyond
Theres fifty-seven channnels and nothin on
Well we might a made some friends with some billionaires
We might a got all nice and friendly
If wed made it upstairs
All I got was a note that said “Bye-bye John
Our love is fifty-seven channels and nothin on”
So I bought a .44 magnum it was solid steel cast
And in the blessed name of Elvis well I just let it blast
Til my TV lay in pieces there at my feet
And they bsted me for disturbin the almighty peace
Judge said “What you got in your defense son ?”
“Fifty-seven channels and nothin on”
I can see by your eyes friend youre just about gone
Fifty-seven channels and nothin on
Fifty-seven channels and nothin...
oh boy what will we do without all the drag queens on the LOGO or the goofy movies from the canes network. Hey maybe people will start reading again
Pffft what good are coat haangers and tin foil without pliers to turn the darn thing on and change channels.
They’re calling it a “Zombie” satellite. Apparently it still has power, but they can’t get it to respond.
uh...there is no more ANALOG TV!
Maybe the Chi-coms will shoot it down since they’re known for that.

If I miss LOST tonight there’s going to be hell to pay ...
I always thought that they should have put multiple fail safe, dead man’s switch type circuitry on these birds. So in case what has now happened ever happened all the transponders would have simply died after a short period of time without ground control signals.
The dead man switches would not have been effected by any solar storm as they would have best been constructed mechanically or chemically, not dependent on a computer that might have failed.
I suppose the slight chance of fail safes malfunctioning and shutting down an expensive satellite was thought to be too much of a risk.
Now these two sats will be sending competing signals on the same frequency ranges to the ground, G15’s footprint might also drift from the US and begin to point elsewhere...not sure if the sats stabilization system is working or not.
SyFy network was on G15, it’s now on G12.
G12 has the same C band transponders as G15, but it lacks the L band gear of G15.
AMC 11, which may soon be blocked by the signal from G15 carries the following stuff.

Another coincidence!
Just as Obama wants to to turn the Internet into a ‘utility’....
There was a great commercial the other night (don’t know what they were advertising so I guess it wasn’t that great). A satellite in space gets hit and starts sparking. Switch to an older couple in a car with a computer voice giving them direction. The computer voice starts giving them crazy instructions. They drive like maniacs obeying the computer voice. The voice says STOMP ON THE BREAKS NOW!! and they end up right at the edge of a cliff. It was done so wall it was hilarious.
Coat hangers can actually make the best HDTV antennas, you just need a few more tools: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EWQhlmJTMzw
This is why I have cable and satellite.
uhhh.
Thanks Willie. I appreciate the mention. So it’s the decoding of the digital signal that is the problem. Okay...
Thanks Dan. Good to know. You and Willie Green educated me. ;-)
A smaller gauge of wire is better, but I bent a fractal antenna for our DTV broadcasts.
