Happiness Comes With Age, Study Reveals

Life looks a little rosier after 50, a new study finds. Older people in their mid- to late-50s are generally happier, and experience less stress and worry than young adults in their 20s, the researchers say.

The results, based on a Gallup phone survey from 2008 of more than 340,000 Americans, held even after the researchers accounted for factors that could have contributed to differences in well-being with age, such as whether the participants were married, had children at home or were employed.

So if having a partner and getting rid of the kids aren't responsible for the uptick in happiness and general life satisfaction with age, then what is? More studies will be needed to find out, the researchers say.

"That can be based on social things, on societal things, on biological things; and for us that is the big question," study researcher Arthur Stone, a psychologist at Stony Brook University in N.Y.

Two ways to look at life

The findings agree with previous work showing well-being varies with age. And some studies have narrowed things down to suggest that happiness comes with being old, male and Republican.

I turned 55 when Obama took over in ‘09, instead of looking forward to a nice happy retirement ahead, all I can think of is this SOB stealing the future from me, my kids and grandkids, and what is left of America when he and his minions get through crapping on it.

As I approach old(er) age, I’m increasingly finding that I don’t care about a great many things that some people think are a Great Big Deal.

Children care about far too many things these days. And they’ve been indoctrinated to tell us all just how much they care about every little thing.

Increasingly, I find myself telling kids to STFU, because one of the things I truly no longer care about is what young skulls full of tapioca pudding think about anything. I don’t care what they think about the weather, much less the climate. I don’t care what they think about politics, because they can’t answer even basic questions about the Constitution or structure of US Government.

They’re just noisy blobs of glorious stupidity and ignorance. And as such, until they a) at least rent a clue, and b) learn how to use said clue, anything that comes out of their pieholes is noise.

Me, too.

I’m not sure if I’m happier, or I just don’t give a sh*t anymore.

The only thing I want to see is all those damn radicals go down in flames at the voting booth in November. I have been sick of them since the Viet Nam War!!

Well. I didn't see that coming!

Ain't that the truth! It seems that every announcement of a medical finding has the disclaimer along the lines of "More studies are needed."

To hear my mother-in-law complain and hear things that some Dr. Oz said (sex is not enjoyable after 40), I was ready to end it all at 40. Thankfully, I am related to people who made(make) the most of their golden years.

I'm a poster child for "Tis a shame youth is wasted on the young". I'm smarter, wiser and more clear-headed than when I was in perpetual testosterone mode.
Happier? If by "happy" we mean a lack of worry and anxiety then, yes, I am. The downside for me at this age now is that I'm so damned ugly! But my honey loves me anyway so it cancels out, I guess.

Children care about far too many things these days.

Mostly themselves.
