Obama: Beheading of Daniel Pearl ‘captured the world’s imagination’ [video]
daily caller ^ | May 18, 2010 | staff

Posted on 05/18/2010 11:52:09 AM PDT by Nachum

President Obama today signed into law The Daniel Pearl Freedom of Press Act, which expands efforts to identify countries that don’t share our love for the First Amendment. He also took time to honor the man the bill is named after, journalist Daniel Pearl, who was kidnapped and beheaded by Islamic extremists in 2002 in what the President — with nary a teleprompter in sight — called a moment that ‘captured the world’s imagination.’ The Obama administration has pushed to have Pearl’s professed killer, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, tried in civilian court.

I could have lived the rest of my life without having my imagination captured by what those barbaric animals did to him.

I can’t say what this POtuS makes me feel without getting banned.

“Capture the imagination” is always, always, always used in a positive light, to mean that the imagination has been engendered by an inspirational act of some sort.

Yes, it is.

And Obama's use of this phrase can mean either, in the best case scenario, that he is wholly emotionally disconnected as a human being, and is robotically trying to come up with platitutes to fit various situations, or it can mean, in the worst case scenario, that he identifies with Pearl's killers and that his use of a positive word is, indeed, a true Freudian slip.

There is NO save for him here. If he really did a malaprop, like his Veep Biden, he would have IMMEDIATELY corrected himself over-the-top so as not to offend, as in "Whoa, what am I saying here??" so as not to be thought cruel and heartless. He did not do that. He doesn't give a hoot either way (in my two above scenarios).

Well, among the decent translations possible into Arabic would include “Kabir!” — which is the root of “ackbar” as in “Allah Ackbar!”

I just watched the video.

Through the whole thing he is so calm and even somewhat bored-looking. He is filled with uhhhs and ehhhhs without the prompter, of course.

And with Daniel's little son standing inches from his face, he says that "the LOSS of Daniel Pearl..." (it was a MURDER, and I think even the child can hear that!!! He was not missing in action! He was MURDERED!) "..captured the world's imagination" I STILL CAN'T BELIEVE HE SAID THAT!!

"... because it reminded us, ehhh, uhhh, of how valuable,,, uh,,, a free press is..."

WHEN YOU HEARD OF DANIEL PEARL'S MURDER, is that what you were thinking??? WHen you saw the video (if you did), were you thinking AHHH, A FREE PRESS IS VALUABLE????????

It's like he was told to speak for 2 minutes and connect Daniel Pearl's murder to the necessity of a free press for the sake of this award or law or whatever, and he went MINIMALIST on the connection.

"Bla bla, we 'lost' Daniel Pearl, imagination, new law, great press, bla bla bla, let's sign and go to lunch.."

Daniel Pearl's extremely brutal murder was the asterisk on 911, to make us completely understand who our enemy was and what its intentions were. Our President does not understand this. We are without a leader.

Sure you can if you have buddies.
Your boss can lie on you eval. Give you credit for someone else’s work. Move you to ‘management’ where you don't have to do anything technical.

They got it all worked out. But, yes you would find them more in business where their output is less specifically defined.

Bob, I need you to write a company ethics statement.
Bill, I'll get right on that.

Then Bill get recruited to another company with a big promotion and a big raise based on Bob's recommendation.
Then Bill hires Bob with a promotion and raise.

Then Bob based on Bill's rave reviews goes to another company and hires Bill and on and on. That's how it works.

These are two guys. Now imagine you have a network of thousands to call on. The reason these guys like each other is because they all know the rules. That's what they were taught, the rules.

They all know that they are not geniuses, but they stick together, keep their mouth shut, keep quiet about everything no matter how corrupt, and follow the rules. That is part of the reason there is so much corruption in coporate and wall street firms.

I think he’s a V. They look human (sort of) but they’re not, and all nuances of feeling or connotation are lost on them. If “V” weren’t fiction, that would be my choice!

Seriously, though, he’s not what he says he is (he’s neither “African American” nor “American,” and he’s sure not “Christian”), he’s not very smart, and he’s entirely in his own world...must of which involves hiding his past from the people of the United States.

So I can see that he might be a little stressed and prone to blow it on the meaning and use of certain expressions.

I’m a linguist, and it’s rare for native speakers to get these things wrong; it happens, but then they will usually correct themselves. Near native speakers (highest level of proficiency for a non-native speaker) do it occasionally, and generally don’t recognize it until later.

The other people who occasionally have trouble with the affective meaning of phrases are people who have severe emotional problems (such as autism) or people who have had brain injuries. I’ve always wondered about that scar on the right side of Bambi’s head.

The barbaric butcher of another human being “captured the world’s imagination.”????? It makes it sound like people were buying popcorn for the event! Once again I am sickened and embarrassed to have this ______ in the White House. Fill in the blank for yourselves; I’m fresh out of postable nouns.

This can’t be right — he didn’t really say “Captured the world’s imagination” did he? That wouldn’t make any sense!

It captured his imagination. He wishes he had the balls to be a real jihadi.

"There ya go!" (der der der)

This is my point. A normal person who misspeaks, whether it's Biden or even George W. Bush, would IMMEDIATELY correct himself, a la Biden's famous Up Chuck comment, where his cover was hilariously over the top. "Oh NO, what am I sayin'?? EVERYONE, stand up for Chuck!"

I bet Obama never even bothered to think about what he had said. And doesn't care right NOW. He will wait to see how big any uproar over this will be, and not make a correction unless he really "has" to. He cares not.
