South Korea to Accuse North of Torpedo Attack
The NY Times ^ | 5/18/2010 | Choe Sang-Hun

South Korea has concluded that a North Korean torpedo sank one of its warships in March, killing 46 sailors, according to government officials and domestic news reports on Tuesday. South Korean officials are preparing to announce the results of their investigation later this week.

The much anticipated finding will accuse North Korea of committing one of the worst military provocations on the Korean Peninsula since the end of the Korean War, deepening tensions between the countries. North Korea, denying involvement in the sinking, has vowed to retaliate against any attempt to link it with the March 26 explosion that broke the South Korean corvette in half near a disputed sea border. But the South has pledged “resolute measures,” including economic sanctions, once the investigation is complete.

“We will blame a torpedo attack and link it to North Korea,” said a government official briefed on the investigation, adding that the authorities were still fine-tuning an official announcement to be made on Thursday.

He refused to discuss forensic evidence that will be cited in the report.

In a series of closed-door briefings scheduled for Wednesday, the Foreign Ministry intends to present to Chinese, Russian, Japanese and European diplomats “scientific and objective evidence to back up the conclusion that it was a North Korean torpedo attack,” said the South Korean news agency Yonhap.

Even if North Korea didn’t have a hand in it and it was a mine, etc., they have been provoking South Korea with their taking of property and use of military ships.

This doesn’t look good. Fortunately, South Korea has a huge amount of industry to help it wipe out North Korea.

Probably nothing. But NK will force the issue. NK has little choice but to start a war at this point. What remains to be seen is whether they have the Chicom’s blessings.

Maybe he'll offer them both free health care?

It's sad really...the democrats are oh so Machiavellian when it comes to dealing with national politics, but they fail to grasp international politics at even a rudimentary level. I have zero confidence that Zero can handle this situation without it becoming a huge mess.

You’re absolutely correct. Mainly because he doesn’t know what to do about it. He has no cajones.

Obama won’t meddle in this one.

Considering the number of American troops stationed in SK, Obama will have to get involved at some point.

This regime of clown shoes's diplomacy sounds like a broken record - if you accuse us, if you monitor us, if you stand in the way of..., if you prevent..., WE WILL CONSIDER THIS A THREAT AND RETALIATE.

As nukes proliferate further into rouge states, expect a whole bunch more copy cats of this diplomacy, which has gone unchecked. Until someone finally calls this bluff.

Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it should be restated as human history proves that 'history' is always forgotten, and repetition is an absolute. This is very reminiscent of the habitual 'line in the sand crossing' preceeding both world wars.

Correct me if I am wrong...
But are we not currently at war with North Korea?

With a declared Armistice preventing open hostilities?

Absolutely. South Korea will be thrown under the bus just like Israel. You mess with NK and you’re in China’s playground. No way Obama will tangle with that hornet’s nest. Even if China loses control over the nutcase in North Korea Obama will do nothing. If I was living in SK, I’d be leaving asap.

Probably a sternly worded letter protesting in the strongest possible terms. I think that covers all the standard cliches.

Well, I'm sure the torpedo was built during the Bush admin...so how could anyone blame Obama for something that he "inherited"? /s
