With the leaders of five tribes in attendance, Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas read a congressional resolution Wednesday apologizing for "ill-conceived policies" and acts of violence against American Indians by the U.S. government.

Two problems with your logic:
1. We came here and attacked first. Did the Spanish commit atrocities against the Moors when they threw them out of Spain? Let the Moroccans ask for an apology all day long, no one cares.
2. There’s no ‘Native American State’ to apologize, just some separate tribes, but there’s a USA from back then.
Land has been conquered and changed owners for centuries.
“Do you want to apologize to the ones who murdered entire tribes? I am talking about Indians who did that.”
I love your logic, they were killing each other anyway so no big deal if we killed them. How many wars were going on in Europe all that time? Europeans killing each other. Would it be OK if the Mongols had taken over, killed as many as they could AND settled the land to this day as a few Europeans were in reservations? The Europeans dukes and princes were killing each other all the time, no?
Mistakes were made by both sides. The indians killed innocents (women and children) just to terrorize the settlers thinking they would leave.
I’ve always said that the stronger culture won out. The indians were primative beings who would still be nomdic and living in teepees if not for the European settlers. If the English had not initially settled America, Asians or other Europeans would have.
It’s like the argument against La Raza who wants Texas, NM, AZ and Calif sent back to Mexico, since the US stole the land. Had Mex held on to these territories, they’d be just like the Mexico we see today, corrupt, poor, and underdeveloped, just like the US would be had the native cultures remained preimminent.
Why was it their land? Because they took it from whoever had it before they got here. The fact that they may have taken it from other Indians does not mean a thing.
In fact there seems to be some evidence now that there were people here before the Indians.
I don’t blame them for fighting to keep their way of life, I would have done the same thing. The problem is they had no problem with taking whatever they wanted from others who had lived on the land.
What really bugs me is the distortion of history which is now totally part of any discussion about those times.
Your statement shows just how dishonest your argument is. You talk about killing as many as they could. That is simply not a valid statement.
We could easily have killed them all. The fact that there are probably millions of Indians in America today speaks totally of the decency of White people. Many, but not all, Indians would not have shown the same mercy had they prevailed.
You did WHAT?! Better apologize!
Disclaimer: I was born here in the US and didn't attack anyone. Not sorry.
The indians played the game and sided with the British and laughed at the idea that the colonists would beat the British Empire.
And so, who would get the lands that the British claimed in America? And that's how we came to be the great nation that we are.
Look at it this way:
The white settlers were homeless with everything
they owned in their little covered wagons. They were
immigrants bringing diversity to the Western US.
They were only looking for work the Indians wouldn’t do.
The Indians used racial epithets against them
e.g. ‘PALEFACE’ The Indians owe their descendants
reparations for goodness sakes.
It sounds like you'd be a supporter of the Supreme Court Kelo decision.
I was taught beading by a lovely Seneca Indian...Virginia Snow. She was about 85 at the time.
She said all the good indians go to Canada. She also said the young kids just drink and hang around and are very lazy. You could tell that she was sooooo disappointed in their way of life.
Brilliant!
Whew! The first time through I read that as beheading. :)
It was horrible but this has been done before..
Give O a little more time.....
She belonged to the Turtle tribe and of course had a nice turtle collection.
Her son was a minister and she made some of his robes. Real proud of him.
I don’t know how well nomadic and living in teepees describes the tribes who got the apology. They were all relatively advanced.
They may not have had a lifestyle as advanced as the Europeans at the time, but it isn’t like they were all living some horrible short life.
ya and taking away our own freedom to do it...
