Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

May 22, 2010 Republicans Capture House Seat in Obama's Hometown

Honolulu -- Republicans scored a midterm election victory Saturday when Honolulu City Councilman Charles Djou won a Democratic-held House seat in Hawaii in the district where President Obama grew up -- the latest triumph for the GOP as it looks to take back control of Congress.

Djou's victory was a blow to Obama and other Democrats who could not rally around a candidate and find away to win a congressional race that should have been a cakewalk. The seat had been held by a Democrat for nearly 20 years and is located in the district where Obama was born and spent most of his childhood.

"This is a momentous day. We have sent a message to the United States Congress. We have sent a message to the national Democrats. We have sent a message to the machine," Djou said. "The congressional seat is not owned by one political party. This congressional seat is owned by the people."

Djou received 67,274 votes, or 39.5 percent. He was trailed by state Senate President Colleen Hanabusa, a Democrat who received 52,445 votes, or 30.8 percent. The other leading Democrat, former U.S. Rep. Ed Case, received 47,012 votes, or 27.6 percent.

Republicans see the victory as a powerful statement about their momentum heading into November. They already sent a Republican to the U.S. Senate to replace the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy of Massachusetts -- a place that was once thought to be the most hostile of territories for the GOP. Now Republicans can say they won a congressional seat in the former backyard of the president and in a state that gave Obama 72 percent of the vote two years ago.

See how Fox plays along? Made sure to mention this was where obama “was born”? They should have said “alledgedly”.

The dems reaction is like one I saw at a Roulette Table once. A player played $10 a roll and would sometimes win back $4. He jumped for joy at his winnings. I wanted to tell the guy that he had just flushed 6 bucks for the roll he just won.

Those two won’t be enough to offset the massive RAT losses that night.

They are pissed. CNN has it buried somewhere deep on their website where it hardly qualifies as a headline whereas I don’t see it on nbcnews at all.

THEY ARE PISSED. Love it.

Have a nice Sunday, Bammy. Well, maybe not. Oh well!

As far as I’m concerned anyone who has all their records sealed, including the birth certificate, has something to hide. And if you think it’s crap then you’re full of ..... CRAP!

I’m glad he won the seat, but let’s be realistic...he’s got about zip-point-nada chance of keeping that seat after November when he only has to face ONE ‘Rat challenger.

However, the Democrat vote was split and the Republican did not win a majority, only a plurality

2 years ago the Republican would not have won a plurality, even with two Dems running. Whats more Obambi supposedly has a 67 % favorable rating here.

The only way a Republican wins this seat outright is if they pick up 110 seats next Fall. But I'll take 40+ seats, thanks.

Pretty easy to win when there are two Democrats splitting the left-wing vote. The way I see this is the Republican got 39% and the Democrats got 59%.

It would have been nice to have won in PA-12.

So easy it hasn't happened in 20 years. Murtha’s district stayed Dem because the Dem ran on an anti-Obama platform. Let's see what he does while actually serving, because I think it will flip to the GOP in November.

Two Dark Blue States have elected Republicans. What do you think will happen in the Lighter Blue and Purple States come November? I can't wait!

POLITICO is already spinning this from the Dem side saying the Dems maintain it had more to do with ‘local dynamics’ than a statement about Obama.

I hope the Dems continue to go with that angle,,,,,,all the way to November.
