U.K. Bans Doctor Andrew Wakefield Who Linked Autism to MMR Vaccine

A gastroenterologist who persuaded millions of parents worldwide that the vaccine used to prevent measles, mumps and rubella might cause autism has been banned from practicing medicine in his native Britain after the country's top medical group said Monday he conducted his research unethically.

Dr. Andrew Wakefield was the first researcher to publish a peer-reviewed study suggesting a connection between autism, inflammatory bowel disease and the MMR vaccine.

In February, Britain's leading medical journal, "The Lancet, "retracted Wakefield's controversial 1998 study just days after Wakefield was found guilty by a British panel of acting unethically in his research on autism.

Wakefield's study prompted a worldwide anti-vaccination movement, which has been partially blamed for an outbreak of measles that hit 15 U.S. states in the summer of 2008. American parents have gone so far as throwing "measles parties," in which they expose their children to the virus to help them build up a natural resistance to it, in an effort to avoid giving their children the vaccination. Doctors have said this practice is both dangerous and ineffective.

Previously, 10 of the 13 authors who worked on Wakefield's study renounced its conclusions, and "The Lancet" has said it should never have published the research.

Isn’t the exalted peer review process supposed to weed out stuff like this?

How’d they miss that one?

Of course. And it ultimately did, as it almost always ultimately does. Science admits mistakes and apologizes for them. In cases where the research is deliberately fudged, it may take a bit longer than we would like because it is not as transparent.

Of course i know what you aim here is, and it’s a cute tactic, but it’s not serving you well.

My aim is that scientists nor their methods are not gods like some of them seem to think themselves as, and that gets proven every day.

Your claim wasn't about autism, but that no one had been harmed with vaccines. The original claim about vaccines and autism might be false, but so is yours.

sorry. to clarify: There was never a link b/w autism and MMR vaccines. As with anything in life, there are risks involved, however.
