Australia ordered the expulsion of an Israeli diplomat Monday after investigators concluded Israel was responsible for forging four Australian passports that were used in the slaying of a Hamas operative in Dubai.
Australia's reaction echoes that of the United Kingdom, which in March expelled a diplomat in retaliation for the use of 12 fake British passports in the plot to kill Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh. Dubai authorities blame Israel's Mossad intelligence service for the January slaying.
The governments of Ireland, Germany and France have yet to state how they will react to similar cases of alleged identity fraud against its citizens, as revealed in the investigation.
Australia had not expelled a foreign diplomat since 2004.
Foreign Minister Stephen Smith told Parliament that the operation to kill Hamas official Mahmoud al-Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel room was not the first time Israel had forged Australian travel documents. He did not elaborate on previous incidents, but said the latest transgression breached "confidential undertakings" between the two countries that have stood for several years.
"These are not the actions of a friend," he said. "This is not what we expect from a nation with whom we have had such a close, friendly and supportive relationship."
Smith said Israel had been asked to withdraw a diplomat, whom he did not identify, within a week. The duration of the expulsion was indefinite.
Israeli radio stations have reported that the diplomats expelled from Australia and Britain were Mossad representatives.
"We regret this decision by the Australian government," Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor told The Associated Press. "It is not in line with the importance and the quality of the relationship between our countries."
Israeli ambassador Yuval Rotem is out of Australia until early next month.

Shrug. Israel isn’t the only nation infested with a self destructive populace.
They ought to pin medals on the Israelis who made the passports. Throw them a state dinner. Offer to help with the next batch of forgeries. Etc.
A really enterprising person could actually get paid to write out forged passports for intelligence agencies.
Would you be so supportive, if the forgery involved American passports? America would never tolerate any foreign nation forging its passports, and would have reacted in the same way as Australia.
In a war against our real enemy (Radical or even silent Islam) I would volunteer my passport if it would help.

Of course. But the actions by Israel appeared amateur at best. All the attention grabbed and being compromised by the hotels cameras, etc.

Exactly, there’s also probably a lot of ‘shame on you for getting caught’ about this.
To be fair, through most of its existence, Mossad could get away with stunts like this. Even where hotels had security cameras, they didn't keep the tapes, and the cassettes were reused so much that they could barely be used to identify people you knew. Israel simply failed to plan for the effect of recent changes in technology on figuring out what happened after the fact. I'll bet they learned a lot from this and the next one will be back to their usual level of untraceability.

And I would support that. If the free nations would get serious about going after known, murderous terrorists, we could actually make some headway.
Hence the massive, deadly-serious, nation-wide crackdown on illegals forging American documents and stealing American IDs. /s
[Hint: Illegals do it to game the system. The Israelis did it to rid the world of a great, ongoing and extremely dangerous evil. But you just go ahead with that air of supreme moral superiority. I’m sure the world would be a safer place if you were in charge.]

Well that’s the problem, isn’t it? I lack the skillz, the nerves of steel, and the bedrock courage to go after one of the world’s most dangerous Jihadi terrorists, In A Muslim Country, neutralize him, and somehow get back out. In a sane world the leader of every free country would acknowledge the debt of gratitude owed these operatives, and offer a simple message to the Muslim world. ‘You don’t like what just happened, then take care of the terrorists yourself. Otherwise, zip it.’
