What is the real reason for the census 2010?
05-28-2010 | Me

Can someone please tell me the pros (are there any?) and cons (I'm certain there's plenty)of the census?

I didn't send mine in but have had an idiot coming to my house the last couple weeks or so. I finally faced him and told him legally I only had to answer one question and that is how many people live in my household. Am I required to answer anything more than that?

From Article 1, Section 2:

Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers, which shall be determined by adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to Service for a Term of Years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three fifths of all other Persons.

The actual Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.

. . . "enumeration" means a count or census.

And here I was thinking I was lucky not to get the infernal long form census.

You are correct. Even the census worker who came to my door admitted that the only legal requirement was the count. He said he would merely indicate “refused to answer” on the remainder of the pages. There were a LOT more than 12 questions, by the way.

I am truly glad that you have been able to find out more about your family. Really, I am. However, at what price for untold millions. We can’t even begin to fathom how this data has been used against the “collective us” - against freedom, against taxpaying citizens unknowingly..

I stand corrected. It’s mainly a means to determine the states representatives but as I read it, it does include taxes as well. By the way, my real name is Tanto so I am not taxed.

When the Constitution was written, it was thought that coupling taxes and representation in the House to the census would discourage states from inflating their reported number of residents because doing so would also raise the federal taxes that could be imposed on the state. In that small detail and in so many other respects, the Constitution aimed at creating a system of checks and balances. The Framers were shrewd, war tested realists who knew from experience that political power always offered temptations to abuse.

There was a time on FP when the average Freeper poster would have known this and if they didn't, they would have looked it up themselves before asking such a easliy answered question. The times have changed

I remember way back when.
