US considers sending carrier to Korea
Washington Post ^

U.S. defense officials say they may deploy the massive aircraft carrier USS George Washington off the Korean Peninsula in the Yellow Sea, where North Korea allegedly sank a South Korean warship.

The deployment would be a show of force by the U.S., which has vowed to protect South Korea and is seeking to blunt aggression from North Korea. An international investigation last month blamed North Korea for torpedoing the Cheonan warship in March, killing 46 sailors.

U.S. officials, who spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly, said Wednesday that a final decision on deployment of the nuclear-powered carrier was likely by the end of the week.

Does anyone think it is a coincidence that all these things are happening when:
1. Obama is considered to have reached the halfway point in his administration
2. No one thinks he will win a second term
3. His appointees are in place and all the Bush people gone

Folks, me thinks that the locals are going to get a little froggy, The local town marshal has had too much to drink and is passed out in the corner.

What do you think all the young spit shooters are going to do at the village square dance with alcohol and not law man to up hold the peace.

Folks, it is going to be a riot. You have just seen the opening move of the out of town bully spitting on someone’s boots.

**********************************************************

Actually I find it more troublesome that the carrier is going to NK and not to the Middle East....who knows...maybe in a few weeks the carrier will take a detour to ME.

They don't really have a carrier going to NK. GW going to NK is roughly equivalent to Clint Eastwood going to the end of his driveway. She is home ported in Japan.

I thought it sounded like a replay of Carter.

Yes, the best anti-submarine weapon is one of our attack boats. I wish we had about 50 more.

Remember when the Chinese sub popped up on one of our ships? they were surprised the sonar didn’t pick up the sub

And the South Koreans were stunned that the North Korean sub was able to get close to the Cheonan, fire a torpedo that was never detected, and escape. Part of the delay in acknowledging what happened was due to the disbelief that could actually happen. But it did.

It seems this "show of force" will be staying away from the the sea border with the North for fear of upsetting Kim and the Chinese...

The drill is to take place between the Taean Peninsula and Baeknyeong Island, with vessels traveling only up to waters near Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi Province, for fear of possible protest from China.

There have reports that U.S. and S. Korea would do a massive show of force. Still it seems a little hollow.

Sounds a lot more like “don’t do it again” than “you went too far this time”.
